Similarities Between Roomba S9+ The Roborock S5 Max
Let’s quickly turn to the similarities between both robots.
1. Intelligent navigation
Both models have intelligent navigation, which means that they move in straight lines. iRobot coins are in ‘ordered rows’.

1. Navigational algorithm
I mentioned earlier that these bots are similar because they are both intelligent mobility bots, but the similarity ends there.
The Roomba S9+ It uses VSLAM, while Roborock uses SLAM.
What is the difference?
VSLAM relies heavily on a camera mounted on top of it to take snapshots of its surroundings and remember (in iRobot’s terminology) “landmarks”.
If you’ve ever taken photos, you’ll quickly learn that your camera relies heavily on light.
Light plays a big role in image quality.

This variance depends on the navigational technology used.
Aside from creating accurate maps, LIDAR bots have more containment options – such as using invisible walls.
These are lines drawn on the map that prevent the robot from crossing them.
What makes it so useful is creating diagonal lines, and adding more to areas you can block.
Technically, the iRobot has a virtual wall, but it’s a physical device that fires a signal into a range of about 10 feet or a blocking area four feet in diameter to block objects within its radius.
It is an additional cost to purchase them in addition to the batteries over time.
I prefer the app version because it does the job and offers more options for consumers.
Both models also have containment boxes to prevent square or rectangular space.
iRobot calls these no-go zones, while Roborock does its job as no-go zones.
The Roomba S9+ is iRobot’s only D-shaped option, similar to Neato BotVac.
This upgrade, combined with the upgrades, enables it to vacuum better than any robot I’ve tested.
In comparison, the Roborock S5 Max uses a more traditional round frame.
4. Brush design and layout
Flip the robots over and you’ll see how shape affects their design.

Not a problem when getting rid of dirt, but it can be a problem when cleaning.
Both use a high-efficiency filter that helps block allergens while running.
But the S9+’s prepacked system ensures allergens stay inside when emptied.
There is no exposure to dust or dirt because the bag seals itself when pulled out.
6. Clean the base station
Just Roomba S9+ It has a self-emptying dock option, while the Roborock S5 Max does not.
You’ll have to look at the S7+ if you want a Roborock with an automatically empty dock.
7. Battery and runtime

However, the powerful motor limits its running time by about 75 minutes. I tested it at the maximum setting, and the run time was reduced to about 45 minutes.

While there are similarities between the two, there are much more differences.
So I am going to highlight the notable features that are only available in each app.
1. Live Map [Roborock S5 Max]
One huge advantage that a LIDAR-based robot has over a camera-based robot is the live map.
This feature shows users in real time the exact bot location and cleaning status across lines.
The only VSLAM bot I’ve tested with a live map is the Yeedi Vac Station, and it’s still streaming compared to the Roborock version.
2. Invisible wall [Roborock S5 Max]
In addition to the live map, the S5 Max has an invisible wall feature or the option to draw straight or diagonal lines to block out restricted areas.
3. Containment boxes [Both]
iRobot and Roborock both have containment access but with different names to prevent square or rectangular spaces.
It’s an excellent tool for securing smaller areas like cat litter or your child’s play area.
Like I said earlier, iRobot calls them Restrictions, and Roborock calls them Restrictions.
Roborock also has another type called no-mop area, which has a similar function but prevents the robot from scanning the selected areas.
4. Range Mapping [Roomba S9+]
iRobot has a feature they call Play Maps where the robot goes into exploratory mode with the vacuum motor turned off.
One of the goals of this feature is to increase the range and capture the map as quickly as possible.
To get the most out of it, you’ll have to make sure the area is well lit, all doors open, and any obstructions cleared.
5. Savings Map [Both]
iRobot and Roborock apps have a map save feature. iRobot wins this category because it can Save (up to) ten map levelsWhile Roborock can save a maximum of four.
However, the Roborock app has an automatic map detection feature, so it loads the correct map, based on its initial scan.
6. Clean areas [Roomba S9+]
One of the features of the iRobot app that is not available with Roborock is the clean areas.

The Roborock app has a similar area cleaning feature, but users can’t save it, unlike the iRobot version.

8. Scheduling [Both]
These apps also provide a scheduling feature to fully automate the cleaning process.
One of the advantages of the S9+ is its auto-emptying dock that empties the robot’s trash after it’s docked, so people don’t need to do such a menial task.
The S5 Max does not have a self-emptying feature, so users will have to empty the trash manually.
However, iRobot’s scheduling feature has one advantage. There is a gap of at least three hours between runs.
Roborock doesn’t have this limitation, so you can schedule as needed.
These robots have intelligent mobility and will move in straight lines, but there are two main differences.
The Roomba S9+ Relies on a top-mounted camera, ground sensors, and VSLAM for navigation, while the S5 Max has LIDAR and SLAM.
I would go with LIDAR between the two because it offers better accuracy with map generation and location tracking.
Laser sensors are not dependent on light, so the S5 Max can be used in complete darkness, while the S9+ needs lighting to function optimally.
The Roomba S9+ Better with the amount of debris cleaned up on each pass despite inefficient navigation.
I picked up nearly every wreckage crumb by the end of the first swipe, beating just about every other brand in this category.
The Roborock brush’s narrow roll hurt it somewhat as it didn’t have the same wide brushing path.
But it is the second best robot vacuum cleaner in terms of how clean it picks up dirt.
It’s better than other brands I’ve tested like Ecovacs, DreameTech, Yeedi and Shark, to name a few in this torture test.

One reason why Roomba S9+ Cleans well thanks to the high air flow. It has the largest (by far) of all robot vacuums I’ve tested at 25 CFM.
In comparison, the Roborock S5 Max has up to 17.74 CFM based on an anemometer test.
But despite the advantage of airflow, there is not much difference between Roomba S9+ and Roborock S5 Max in cleaning tests.
Cool, while I was parsing the numbers, I wasn’t expecting the S9+ and S5 Max to be this close.
The Roomba’s high airflow gave it an advantage in only two areas – sanding on a hard floor and a deep cleaning test.
And there was not much difference with the sand test because the variance is very small (only half a percent).
One thing for Roborock is the extra pass he has, as he can spin up to three times.
None of the other brands I’ve reviewed have this third pass, even Roomba.
What is the best robot on hard floors?
Based on these tests, the connection is very close, with Roomba S9+ Better at cleaning sand and the S5 Max picks up more other debris (on average).
The S9+’s higher airflow wasn’t as deciding against the S5 Max as other brands, which wasn’t surprising as the Roborock S7 also performed better against the S9.
Edge cleaning comparison
The Roomba S9+ The square front is the best robot I’ve tested so far when cleaning edges. It’s also the most efficient, as it only needs one swipe to capture nearly all of the debris.
The Roborock round tire is not ideal for cleaning dirt in this area because it left this out a lot.
Hair wrap comparison
Results were mixed with the hair wrap test as the Roborock S5 Max performed better in the 5-inch test, while Roomba S9+ Pick up more seven inches of strands.
This experience shows that Roomba extracts are not maintenance free and that hair will curl on axles.
The longer filaments can be wound onto the drum, but the lack of any bristles makes cleaning a lot easier.
The Roborock’s combo brush is also easy to clean (no scissors needed), but not as easy to clean as the Roomba.
Which is better on the carpet?
Again, it’s close, but I’ll give a slight edge to Roomba S9+ Because it was picked up more during the deep cleaning test (93% vs 84.75%).
But the S5 Max was still excellent at picking up surface debris, scoring higher than the S9+, which is an impressive feat considering the airflow gap.
Not a contest since Roomba S9+ It does not have this feature.
This versatility makes the Roborock S5 Max outperform most of its peers in this price category.
It is one of the best (if not the best) robot vacuums in cleaning floors, just behind the Roborock S7.
Here are the results.
Even with large red wine stains, I managed to clean most of them after one cycle of three passes.
It’s the three-pass running that separates it from the competition, even the Viomi V3.
If scanning is a priority and you don’t want to spend a few hundred dollars more on a Braava, consider the Roborock S5 Max.
Even with the positive results, I wouldn’t recommend using the S5 Max on heavy, sugary stains as it will leave a sticky residue.
The S5 Max wins this category, running so much more, up to 180 minutes on the lowest power setting.
This is not a surprise because the Roborock uses a higher capacity battery than the iRobot with a capacity of 5200 mAh.
The Roomba’s high-powered motor hurts in this category and will run for a maximum of 75 minutes and about 45 minutes with the maximum setting.
I wouldn’t recommend Roomba inside big houses as it would take longer to finish the whole area.
Another negative consequence of the S9’s powerful motor is noise.
It flipped the audio meter scale by more than 74 decibels, while the S5 Max didn’t even break the 64 decibel mark.
Roomba products are notorious for noise, which is a negative effect of double rollers.
All robot vacuums will require some maintenance to function optimally in the long run, and these models are no exception.
I’ll quickly go through a list of items that need to be cleaned and replaced.
- Basic brush roll: It’s the most abused ingredient since it’s responsible for picking up debris. Clean it once a week with a clean microfiber towel.
- Side brush: The next most abused part is the side brush, as the hair tends to go around the tentacles and base. Unplug to clean any buildup once a week or more if you have pets.
- Dustbin and filter: Empty the trash after each run (for S5 Max). If you’re buying an S9+ with a clean base station, this won’t be a daily chore, but you’ll have to check once a month and clean up any accumulated debris. Tap the filter against a hard surface to remove dirt stuck on the folds. Replace it every two or three months.

After testing these bots extensively, I have to use the Roborock S5 Max for several reasons.
It has smarter and more efficient navigation, better application features, and it can mop floors!
And despite the inconsistency in airflow, the floors are cleaned almost as well as the S9+.
The point for me is the price, which makes the Roborock S5 Max one of the better alternatives for the money.
I would only recommend Roomba S9+ If you need the self-discharge feature and you give high priority to its ability to deep clean in a small home.
Otherwise, save $$ and go with the Roborock S5 Max.
