Oreck Magnesium RS Review and Test

Oreck Magnesium RS Review and Test

Posted on May 22, 2022June 18, 2022 by admin

What do a lot of upright brooms have in common?

Most of these are very heavy. To give you some perspective on how much recent vulnerabilities weigh, let’s review some of them.

It weighs 16 pounds, the Dyson Multi Floor weighs 17.3 pounds, the Shark Rotator NV752 weighs 15.7 pounds and the Kirby Sentria 2 scales more than 20 pounds.

Let me introduce you to the lightest vacuum on the market right now.

Oreck Magnesium RS.This vacuum cleaner is actually lighter than the Hoover Air Cordless 3.0 vacuum cleaner – and Hoover is a cordless vacuum!

how much do you weight?

10 pounds? 9 pounds?

Well how about 8 pounds.

Yes, you’re headed in the right direction, a powerful upright vertical vacuum cleaner that weighs just 8 pounds.

This is truly a game changer as it allows consumers to enjoy the power of a sturdy shaft without having to haul around a large machine.

Oreck has achieved the seemingly impossible by using a magnesium frame instead of steel which reduces overall weight. It still has better durability because magnesium is stronger than many types of steel.

The price is a little high but consumers don’t seem to mind as this is one of the best sellers on Amazon.

Quick look at the features

  • Uses a magnesium frame that reduces weight but increases overall durability
  • Unlike traditional upright vacuums where air passes through a maze of hoses, the Magnesium RS uses direct suction that shortens the path the air must travel, thus increasing performance.
  • The motorized brush rotates at 7000 rpm providing consumers with a great deep clean
  • Wireless Controls “Quick Switch” are actually a fingertip control on the handle of the vacuum cleaner that gives you an easy way to transition from hard floors to carpet
  • It uses what Oreck has dubbed the SlimSwivel which not only swivels but is also virtually flat – this allows you to clean under furniture like a bed
  • It has a completely sealed HEPA system that uses a bag – this prevents 99.97% of allergens (at 0.3 microns) from reappearing.
  • 30 ft power cord
  • 7 Year Warranty (with 5 Annual Adjustments) – This might be the best warranty package on the market (better than Dyson)
  • It has dual LED lights for better visibility
  • Weighs under 8 pounds (7.7 to be exact) – possibly the lightest on the market right now
  • Uses Endurolife belt that prevents unexpected jams
  • It has side brushes on both sides for better edge cleaning

Positives

  • Possibly the lightest on the market right now
  • Direct suction technology improves suction performance
  • Large bag lasts longer before needing replacement (holds about 8 quarts of dry dirt)
  • The fully sealed HEPA bag prevents the return of all allergens – great for people with asthma
  • Long warranty – 7 years

Negatives

  • Too expensive around $500
  • Expensive Replacement Odor Control Bag – About $16 per bag.
  • Unlike Shark or Dyson vacuum cleaners, this one doesn’t come with attachments that allow you to clean upholstery (if you value versatility, use these two instead)
  • Some consumers have complained that it does not work on carpets or rugs

What to expect from a lightweight Oreck

Features

Although this vacuum is light, the performance does not decrease.

Oreck moved in a different direction in terms of material selection. Instead of using a lightweight but also bulky plastic frame. They used magnesium, which is lighter and stronger than any metal out there.

The result is straight performance with cordless weight.

magnesium frame

The magnesium frame allowed the engineers to design it as small as possible without compromising on rigidity.

Hence, you have a vacuum cleaner that is softer than any vertical vacuum cleaner you will find on the market.

Of course since you are using high quality raw materials, it will not be cheap.

Right now, if you bought this on Amazon, the Oreck Magnesium RS would cost just over $435 which is actually cheaper than the Dyson Cinetic.

Now this vacuum cleaner is only lightweight, it also has plenty of power thanks to its powerful suction and motorized brushing that spins at around 7000 rpm.

This is made possible using a technique called “direct suction”.

Check out the infographic below to see how it works…

direct suction

As you can see in the illustration, Oreck’s packaged vacuum cleaners have less hose than other bagless vacuum cleaners that use cyclonic filtration such as Shark and Dyson.

From the bag, the suction goes directly towards the floor nozzle.

Don’t go through a maze of twisting and spinning hoses.

This gives this vacuum the performance that makes it such a highly rated vacuum despite the high price.

Another feature I like is the SlimSwivel design. It has a PLUS swivel steering system that can be almost flat to the ground.

This allows you to clean more areas under furniture than any other vertical vacuum cleaner (except for the Shark).

Combine that with the sleek structure and you’ve got a more accessible upright post under the furniture.

under furniture

HEPA drawstring filter bag keeps out allergens down to 0.3 microns. It also has deodorants that prevent bad odors from seeping into the exhaust. This is a great option for allergy sufferers.

Emptying the cyst is easy. Just unzip the bag, take off the inner bag, and throw it away. There is absolutely no exposure to allergens.

The bags are very affordable – just over $13 for a pack of 6 (a pack of 25 will cost around $100 if you want even more savings).

Each can hold up to 8 liters of dry dirt, if you have a large house, it fills up quickly.

It also has a side brush on both sides that makes cleaning the edges a lot easier.

If you want to see the features in detail, watch this video…

bare floor performance

This vacuum cleaner has a brushing on/off switch that you can easily toggle on the handle. In terms of strength, the direct suction feature gives this straight suction good for picking up fine dust particles and larger debris like rice grains.

Check out this side-by-side comparison to an early Dyson vertical (DC17)…

In just one pass, Oreck Magnesium captures pretty much everything that is in its path. But remember, the Dyson tested was an older model that didn’t have the latest engine and filter.

carpet performance

Oreck Magnesium RS can handle carpets.

It has two speeds – low speed for hard surfaces and high speed for carpets. The highly rigid motorized brush spins over 7000 rpm and will provide very good agitation.

Under all the threads of the rug, there are a lot of allergy-causing particles that can cause any respiratory ailments.

One of these diseases is called allergic rhinitis.

upholstery performance

This broom is strictly a floor cleaner, and it doesn’t have any hose or attachments that allow it to clean upholstery.

Pet hair removal

The strong suction and whisking rod make this a good choice for cleaning pet hair on the carpet. Cleaning won’t be a problem either because you don’t need to pull pet hair out of the enclosure. Simply discard the bag when it’s full – without getting caught in collected pet hair.

Attachments and accessories

This vacuum cleaner does not contain any accessories.

rope length

The power cord is approximately 30 feet long but does not have any wire to rewind. It has a “power cord” that helps you wind the cord at the back of the vacuum cleaner.

Filter cleaning

Vacuum cleaners packed in bags like this one won’t have any filters to clean them. But you need to replace the bag when it is full.

You can buy these bags directly from Oreck or on Amazon for about $13 for a pack of 6. Not real price plus they have HEPA and odor resistant properties.

Another item that you need to check regularly is the drive belt. This part is what drives the motorized brush. You should check the belt regularly to ensure optimum performance of this vacuum cleaner. If you need to replace it, you can do it yourself by following the steps on the Oreck website.

Guarantee

Oreck backs this product with a full 7-year warranty, which is an additional two years compared to any Dyson upright. And for other manufacturers like Shark and Dyson (both have a 5-year warranty) Oreck also includes 5 free tunings per year.

What the heck is tuning? Like a car, the vacuum cleaner needs regular maintenance such as checking the drive belt, cleaning the motor brush, replacing the drive belt, etc.

Oreck will do this for you up to five times (per year) free of charge during the warranty period. This is the first time I’ve heard of a manufacturer offering this kind of free service to their customers, so even though you pay over $400 for your vacuum cleaner, you actually get a lot for your money.

Customer Reviews

This vacuum has a 4.5 star rating from Good HouseKeeping – they say it was easy to maneuver and had good suction (even with pet hair).

One of the best features of this vacuum cleaner is the weight.

The combination of weight and swivel steering allows for better maneuverability, even better than the massive 20-pound Dyson van that some consumers have noted.

Strong and lightweight

Even nimble, this broom has plenty of power, and consumers say it can vacuum anything from hardwood to tile and even carpet. But some reviews caution against using this on really curvy rugs or dense area rugs because it will stop the motorized brush from spinning.

One of the favorite areas that consumers use is right under the bed. The sleek case and handle design combined with the swivel feature make this possible.

lacks attachments

While it has good maneuverability, some consumers have complained about the lack of attachments that allow it to clean upholstery. They will need to purchase a hand-held vacuum cleaner to handle things above the floor.

There have also been complaints about lemon products, specifically, belt not spinning and plastic parts melting, but you’ll see this in most if not all consumer electronics products.

HEPA bags are also a nice addition especially for consumers with asthma and other related conditions.

cheap bags

These bags are relatively inexpensive at less than $3 a piece and will last up to two months. But this depends on factors such as the environment, the size of your home, etc.

If you have a large home or live in a dusty area, you may need to change bags often.

The wireless fingertip controls on the handle are a nice touch because you don’t have to bend over just to adjust the speed or turn off the motor.

Another feature consumers love is the stiff, lash-like side brush that sticks out from the sides of the floor tool.

Where can I buy this?

You can buy this lightweight vacuum cleaner for less than $400. And you’ll be eligible for free 2-day Amazon shipping if you join Prime.

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON

Amazon also sells an extended warranty of up to 3 years if you want that extra peace of mind.

Another option is to buy this directly from Oreck but it will cost more. And you won’t get a quick turnaround with Prime.

to finish

This upright broom is great for people who are tired of carrying heavy brooms that don’t work well.

Weighing just 7.7 pounds, this broom is one of the lightest vertical brooms on the market thanks to a magnesium frame that’s not only lightweight, but sturdy.

Don’t let its looks fool you, this vacuum cleaner does the trick.

When you combine a powerful suction rod and a powerful paddle, you have a nimble and powerful floor cleaner capable of cleaning bare floors and carpets.

The SlimSwivel feature not only swivels but allows this broom to lie flat on the floor. You’ll reach far beyond the bottom of the furniture compared to other, larger uprights.

HEPA filter blocks allergens down to 0.3 microns, so this is great for allergy sufferers.

It is one of the most expensive rolls at the moment but has a 7-year warranty. That’s a full two years more than Dyson.

And you can ask an Oreck technician to “set” your vacuum up to 5 times during this warranty period. You get a lot for your money.
