Neato XV-14 Review: Now Discontinued

Neato XV-14 Review: Now Discontinued

Posted on May 23, 2022May 23, 2022 by admin

Neato has garnered positive reviews from many tech sites such as Trusted Reviews, Robot Shop, and Geek.com over the years.

If you’ve read all of these reviews, one takeaway is that there’s no bullshit that sounds like nice.

It has a navigation system that makes it one of the most efficient robot cleaning devices we have right now.

Taking off the extras like the remote and side brush has allowed Neato to sell their products at a lower price compared to other brands with all the bells and whistles like iRobot, LG and Samsung.

The Neato XV-14 is basically an XV-11 that comes with additional accessories that include 3 extra filters and brush blades as well as an extra replacement squeegee if you purchase it on Amazon.

It also comes in a dark blue color that looks more like a Nintendo game console than a modern robot.

Everything else in it is basically the same with the XV-11.

It’s actually cheaper than the XV-11, add to that the 3 extra filters and brush blades plus the extra squeegee, it’s very good value for your money.

By the way, the XV-14 was already discontinued a long time ago by Neato. In its place is the BotVac Series which contains the latest SLAM algorithm to go along with the laser sensor and a lithium-ion battery.

This means that these robots will be more efficient and will last longer than any of the XV series robots. Be sure to check out our comparison guide.

  • There is no remote control

What do you expect from the Neato XV-14?

All Neato products are the same if you compare the engine and navigation system, the difference lies in the cleaning brush, color and accessories included in the package.

  • Uses a laser-guided sensor to map a room
  • Cleaning can be automatically scheduled once a day, 7 days a week
  • Comes with 3 extra filters, replacement brush blades and squeegee
  • Does not contain HEPA filtration
  • Automatically adjustable height makes it compatible with hard floors as well as plush carpets

Full specifications can be found here.

Mobility

Neato uses a laser sensor that scans the room in 360 degrees before starting its mission.

This same sensor also detects potential obstructions such as furniture and completely avoids them.

The downside to this technology is that the laser only detects things that are within its line of location, so nothing above or below it can see it and will bump into it.

This is where the shock absorber comes into play, if it detects that it has hit an object, it tells the robot to move in another direction.

It can get stuck under furniture if the sensor doesn’t see something hanging – the side of the bed is above the sensor’s line of sight.

Are you going to clean the stairs?

No, none of the robotic vacuums can do that yet.

scheduled cleaning

All Neato products can be scheduled 7 times a week. This is once every day.

Shipping time

Recharging will take between 60 to 90 minutes.

cleaning robot

As with all mechanical and electronic devices, maintenance is very important for them to run flawlessly for a long time.

For Neato, you will need to empty the dirt basket after each run. Simply pull out the dirt container in the middle of the robot, remove the filter, and empty the contents.

Here is a video on how to perform maintenance…

the show length

A full charge gives 60 to 90 minutes of run time, which may not sound like much but with the laser navigation system, it allows this robot to clean rooms way faster than the Roomba.

Although some Amazon consumers got the numbers I mentioned above, they got anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes per charge.

Guarantee

Neato will have a 1 year warranty on the robot plus 6 months on the battery.

Some consumers have stated that they have received replacement units for the defective ones they received without any problems at all.

There have been some complaints though about poor customer service such as Neato asking customers to pay shipping costs when defective units are returned.

Floor cleaning

In a lab test conducted by the Robot Shop, it performed fairly well on hard floors but had some issues picking up light debris like paper and heavy debris like nuts and bolts.

Keep in mind that the tests done here were considered “extreme” so in normal situations it should work fairly well…

Carpet cleaning

Glittered on the mat picks up light debris like pet hair and paper better on this surface than hardwood floors.

carpets

Through the Robot Shop test, it can climb obstacles up to half a centimeter high.

You won’t have any trouble cleaning dark carpets based on a test by Robot Shop. It can clean hairy carpets but not deep…

Some consumers have complained that it does not work well on thick, black carpet.

Pet hair removal

It scored well on the carpet that picked up the most pet hair in a CNET test. So consider getting this if you have a lot of pets at home.

The robot store mentioned that it was better at picking up pet hair on carpet than on hardwood floors.

Customer Reviews

About 60 people left a review and of those only 9 gave negative reviews related to lemongrass.

There is a faulty battery that only lasts a few minutes, buggy software affecting mobility and constant babysitting because it tends to get stuck between the legs of tables or chairs.

If there is one thing consumers do, it is the efficiency this robot cleans. Unlike the Roomba, which walks in a random direction, this robot will clean in a straight back and forth pattern. You will finish the mission faster and miss fewer points.

It wouldn’t clean the edges very well because it didn’t have any edge brushes but consumers didn’t seem to care about this bug because it did so well in other areas.

Consumers had to make some adjustments with Neato around.

They had to remove wires, socks and other debris that might get in the way which is somewhat positive as it forces you to clean up your clutter and then a more tidy house.

While some reviews say they come home to clean floors after scheduling a Neato clean on his own without supervision, others prefer to clean one room at a time.

This will largely depend on the layout of your home and the amount of clutter around the room. The less mess, the more likely the robot will be able to clean several rooms.

Remember that you will need at least 3 feet of space throughout the cargo dock to allow the robot to dock without any problems.

Reviews from other sites

costco

Over 60 people left a review at Costco and most were positive unfortunately it wasn’t available.

Consumers who left positive reviews loved how methodically moving around the room was, leaving cute straight patterns on their carpet, and even naming their robot vacuum!

The pet hair owners were also among the satisfied customers who said it was great at picking up pet hair even under the furniture.

The amount of pet hair that accumulates will be reduced due to the autonomous nature of this robot.

Consumers who switched from the old Roomba series to this one were happy that it was more efficient.

One complaint, however, is the lack of a side brush that hampers its ability to clean edges and corners.

Sam’s Club

Of the 20 reviews, many pet owners were among the satisfied customers who said it helped them clean pet hair on carpets and hard floors.

It helps save time as it is independent.

Complaints were more about reliability issues, a small dirt box, high loudness and this robot not moving well under furniture.

Where can I buy this?

You can still buy this on Amazon for less than $300 and it will be eligible for free two-day shipping if you join Prime.

Extended warranties are also available for up to 3 years if you want that extra peace of mind.

This robot is very old with outdated navigation software and battery. You may want to check out the new BotVac series of robots that will be more efficient and clean your home better.

Conclusion

This product is essentially an XV-11 that comes with 3 extra bristle brushes, 3 extra filters and an extra squeegee brush roll.

I’m not sure if the brush is the same as the one on the XV-21 but having that brush and extra filter will add a lot of value to every dollar you spend.

This robot is great for homes with shallow to medium pile carpet as the suction in conjunction with the mop brush works well to pick up dirt on that surface.

It will also work well on hard surfaces but may struggle a little bit to pick up light debris such as paper.

The navigation system is one of the best I’ve seen on the market because it allows rooms to be cleaned more efficiently, even when they are black.

Other manufacturers have used cameras as part of their navigation system. But the downside to this is that it only works in a lit area. These cameras add to manufacturing expenses and thus produce a more expensive product.
