Kenmore Progressive Review: Deep Cleaning Canister Vacuum

Kenmore Progressive Review and Test

Posted on May 21, 2022June 17, 2022 by admin

If you can design a versatile pet vacuum cleaner to keep pet hair and allergens in the basket, the high-end Kenmore would be very close to the perfect vacuum cleaner.

This purple vacuum cleaner is certified Asthma and Allergy Friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America thanks to its fully enclosed HEPA filtration system.

Most people think they need a vacuum cleaner if they have asthma. But this is a more portable alternative as it will not only clean floors and upholstery as well as other areas above the floor making it a better value for money option.

Since this vacuum cleaner is bagged, you will have to replace the bags and HEPA filters during its service life. But if you don’t mind it, this is a great option for people who have pets and are allergic.

All the tools that come with it are designed with the pet owner in mind. The floor tool will inhale down to the pet upholstery tool the pet’s hair.

Is it worth the $300 price tag?

What do you expect from this safe box for asthma and allergies?

Given the range of features of this vacuum cleaner – it is designed for people who suffer from asthma or have a lot of pets at home.

From a powered main floor head to a fully enclosed bag-using HEPA filtration system – this vacuum cleaner is designed for pet owners with allergies.

KenmoreProgressiveCanister Features

And if you take care of pets, one of the biggest problems will be cleaning pet hair not only on floors but also on upholstery, stairs, air vents, tables, etc.

They are everywhere and with the amount of pet hair shed from our beloved furry animals, they are shedding as snowballs for another problem which is allergies.

If you have both of these issues, the Kenmore Progressive Canister could be the solution that will help you keep your home free of allergens caused by pet hair or litter left by our animal friends.

Although it’s a can, it has a lot of weight – over 20lbs but before you complain about the weight remember you won’t be carrying it, only if you need to lift it or go down a staircase to clean another level of your house.

It weighs a lot because it uses a large 12 amp motor and with the main floor tool having its own motor also adds to the overall weight so it’s not really a bad thing.

Besides the main cleaning tool, the progressive caddy also comes with other accessories that allow you to clean above-floor areas. These include a crevice tool, upholstery/brush kit, and motorized pet powermate.

All of these attachments can be stored inside the case, so there is little risk of misplacing these tools.

If you look at the back of the main floor tool, you’ll find that it has a height adjustment lever that adjusts the height of the main floor tool from “xlo” for bare flooring to “hi” for plush carpeting. While I love the ability to adjust the height, I am concerned that the lever may break or wear out over time. The auto height adjustment feature would be better in my opinion.

bare floor performance

Armed with a brush on/off feature, this one with its powerful suction should be able to pick up dust and other debris without any issues on the exposed floor but review.com said it had trouble picking up uncooked rice even with the brush tool but Consumer Reports says otherwise It performed well on the open floor.

Make sure the brush roller is off and the floor tool is set to its lowest setting.

carpet performance

This is where the progressive enclosure shines. If you have a fluffy carpet at home and need some deep cleaning, this machine is one of the best options to do your job.

But you have to remember to put it in the correct setting to increase the agitation and suction power.

On the right setting, this machine is fully capable of deep cleaning even shaggy carpets. It is able to pick up pet hair, dander, dust and all nasty allergens from carpets.

Consumer Reports says it excels at picking up dust. Manual height adjustment works better than automatic systems in terms of movement. I think I was wrong.

upholstery performance

If you have a lot of pets, upholstery is one of the problem areas. This vacuum cleaner has the tool that will clean pet hair not only on chairs but also on your bed. This tool is called pet powermate which is a fancy term for a small turbo brush.

You can use this tool to attach directly to the handle and clean any upholstery with it.

Pet hair removal

In terms of cleaning pet hair, this machine does the job when combined with suction and agitation plus HEPA filtration, this machine picks up a lot and keeps it inside the bag. Like I said in the introduction, if you have a lot of pets and have allergies, this is a good option.

Attachments and accessories

This vacuum cleaner comes with a total of 4 – crevice tool, upholstery brush/tool, pet powermate and pet hair catcher. If you buy this from Kenmore (through Sears), you get the exposed floor tool, too.

Here’s what some of these tools look like…

rope length

The 21614 cord is approximately 28 feet long which is too long for a drum vacuum cleaner plus the cord has a twist feature.

Filter cleaning

Since this vacuum uses HEPA filters, you can’t clean the filters but replace them once a year. If you live in a dusty environment, you may have to replace it often. These filters cost about $9 for a pack of two.

Another item you need to replace is the bag. Don’t worry about guessing when replacing, the vacuum has an electronic performance indicator that tells you when the bag is full or clogged. These bags usually become clogged when cleaning a lot of fine debris such as sawdust.

Guarantee

Unfortunately, Kenmore vacuums have a one-year warranty. But if you buy this from Amazon, you can buy extended warranties of up to 3 years. This is great if you want more peace of mind.

Consumer Reviews

While consumers love the performance of these vacuums especially cleaning pet hair, there are some styling issues that are hard to ignore.

The first drawback would be the design of the oblique brush upholstery tool. I mean, do you want it to be that wide? I think Kenmore would be better off with a standard brush with longer bristles. This really has short bristles which are pretty much useless. If you try to clean corners and crevices with it, you will find it very difficult to do.

And when the crevice tool is attached, the presence of the brush tool reduces its reach and it is virtually impossible to clean the areas between the seat cushions due to the size.

Another problem area would be the handle size. Some women commented that it is a bulky tool and that the designer did not take the time to consider the size of a woman’s hand when designing it.

When it comes to performance, the consensus is that it was better on carpet versus bare floor. This is due to the design of the floor tool.

The agitation is excellent and the suction is good enough even on curved carpets. The height adjustment also aids in cleaning performance on carpets.

This vacuum cleaner is a great choice for pet owners who suffer from a condition such as asthma. The fully hermetic HEPA filtration system has a bag so allergens stay inside. There is virtually no exposure even if you empty it.

The biggest drawback of a bagged vacuum cleaner is the extra cost of bags and filters. This adds to the cost in the long run.

If you already have a dusty home and want something versatile that picks up allergens as well as pet hair on the carpet, this is a great but not cheap option.

Overall, this is a decent option for pet owners who have homes with a lot of rugged carpeting and are looking for a vacuum cleaner to help them clean pet hair not only carpets but upholstery as well.
