Is Dyson Vertical Too Expensive To You?
Are you looking for something that is not very expensive but at least in terms of performance?
I’ve already written about cheaper upright vacuums like the Shark Navigator Lift Away and Bissell PowerGlide, both of which are very good options for the price.
Let me offer you another option, the Electrolux Precision Brushroll which costs just over $220 (on Amazon).
This mid-priced column has some unique features that will make maintenance a lot easier.
It comes with a self-cleaning brush roller system that sucks up brush debris stuck in the box with the push of a lever.
It also comes with a multi-tool that doubles as a crevice and stair cleaning tool.
If you suffer from allergies, this vacuum cleaner is an ideal choice as it comes with an airtight HEPA filtration system that prevents allergens from coming back out.
Let’s find out how this machine performs in the real world and what CNet has to say about this status quo.

What to expect from Electrolux brush cleaning
At first glance, this device is huge but don’t let appearances fool you.
It weighs just over 17 lbs.
Yes, it is heavy, but it still did not exceed the 20 pound mark.
Maneuverability suffers though, because it doesn’t have any sort of swivel mechanism that would make turning this machine a chore.
The feature I like the most is the brush roller cleaning feature that cuts and sucks all the hair stuck in the beater bar.
This is a common problem with beater bars and cutting long strands of hair can be tedious. The brush roller cleaning feature does it for you and saves you time.
What will you take out of the box?
It also comes with an easy-to-remove one-touch wand that extends up to 12 feet. Unless you have a ridiculously high ceiling, this machine will be able to clean cobwebs and dust bunnies on ceilings in most homes.
When you look at the handle, it looks and feels comfortable.
Moreover, you can adjust the suction level so that you will have no trouble cleaning small area rugs with this.
If you suffer from any form of allergies, this device is one of the best options as it comes with an airtight HEPA filtration system.
The dirt container comes out easily but unlike the Shark Navigator, this one doesn’t have any lift feature that turns it into a drum broom.
This is vertical with a detachable wand and hose allowing it to clean just about anything above the ground.
In terms of tools included, when purchased on Amazon, it comes with a 3-in-1 multi-tool brush and tools that can clean stairs, and act as a crevice tool.
The mouth of this accessory also rotates allowing you to use it on ceiling fans or on top of cabinets – in hard-to-reach places.
bare floor performance
This machine comes with a feature that serves it well on the bare floor – the height adjustment feature. The foot control arm gives you 3 height options, low, medium and high. At the highest setting, it will allow you to pick up larger bits of debris like Cheerios or larger breadcrumbs.
This is a reflection in the tests conducted by CNet. On hardwood, it was able to capture 93% of an ounce on that surface. It also works well on sand and sawdust, catching 97% of the 2.5 ounces scattered over hardwood.
Remember that when you run this machine on the brush it turns on automatically, so be sure to press the lever to turn it off.
In terms of cleaning large pieces of dirt, it picks up less on medium and low pile carpets. Again, the motorized brush inside this machine is stiff and ran better than the DC50 but no better than the Shark Navigator Lift Away on carpet.
In terms of picking up smaller debris like sawdust, it didn’t perform as well as it did on carpet but the results were better than more expensive brands like the Dyson DC41 and DC50.
On the upholstery it comes with two tools that you can use to clean pet hair or loose dirt. First it comes with a soft-bristled dusting brush that works great on wood or laminate surfaces. It also comes with what you call a Versatool tool.
If you’re curious, here’s what it looks like…
It’s basically a tool with two pivoting heads that covers from a crevice tool to an upholstery or drawer cleaner. You can also rotate it halfway to clean tall cabinet surfaces or ceiling fans. This also works great on upholstery because it has a felt layer to move and catch pet hair.
Pet hair removal
Pet hair cleaning is another powerful wing. Of the 0.2 ounces scattered on low and medium carpets, he was able to capture it all. But it struggled a bit on hardwood – it only rose by 75%.
You may have picked up more with the brush roll running but there is a risk of scratching.
Long hair will wrap around the bristles, so you will have to check the brush roll regularly to check and clean it if necessary.
Attachments and accessories
Like I said earlier, if you buy this on Amazon, it comes with two tools – the brush and the 3-in-1 multi-tool that works as a stair cleaner, a crevice tool, and an upholstery cleaner.
The cord is 25 feet long but does not have a cord wrap feature.
This model comes with two filters, the main filter located inside the dirt box and the HEPA filter after the engine on the front. Both are washable.
Here’s an infographic on how to clean both of these filters…
Like Dyson and Shark, this one comes with a 5-year warranty.

Watch it in action
Here’s a brief rundown of the features and how they work on the rug…
How about a demonstration from QVC and tests on different surfaces such as carpets, rugs, and floors? You will also see the Versatool tool running…
If you look at the Amazon rating, it didn’t score as highly as I thought it had a great rating from CNet.
If you look closely at the performance of the reviews it wasn’t really an issue, the quality control was. There have been numerous complaints about the attachments falling off due to the poor quality of the plastic used.
This is the review video of CNet just for your reference…
In terms of performance, this machine works on carpets or on an open floor. The majority of consumers say it works better than Dyson according to some.
The brush roller cleaning technology works and people have reported that it has helped them to keep their motorized brushes frizz-free.
Another great feature is the long extension wand which has a slightly longer range compared to other rolls.
The verstatool seems to be a gimmick though, if you’ve watched the QVC demo, when you try to open both ends of the hub, it doesn’t seem to lock into place. The idea is there and we hope Electrolux will do a better version next time.
Great for pet hair
In terms of picking up pet hair on floors, it’s great. However, the bristles on the brush tool are soft and you will find it difficult to use them to remove pet hair on upholstery with it.
Consumers had mixed opinions about the height adjustment feature. Some are satisfied and others feel that they need more settings.
One consumer commented that if you are having trouble squeezing the rug, you may need to adjust this setting.
Despite the negative reviews about the quality, people say it performed well.
Remember that this comes with a 5 year warranty, so if something goes wrong you can always call or email Electrolux and they will respond and take care of any issues.

This portrait mode would be great for people looking for a cheaper version of the Dyson without sacrificing a lot of cleaning performance.
It performed well in CNet’s cleaning tests, cleaning larger and finer types of dirt more evenly.
The brush roller cleaning feature doesn’t struggle to remove the long human hair stuck on the brush.
But it was still easy to pull out but no vacuum cleaner is perfect.
Remember that all cleaners with brush rolls will have the same problem.
At just under $200 at Electrolux, this machine is a bargain. And it still comes with the same 5-year warranty you’ll find on Dyson but you’ll easily save a few hundred dollars.
It does not have any swivel feature. But if you don’t mind working a little bit harder to get this moving, this is one of the best value for money brooms.
