Is it possible to get wired power from a cordless vacuum cleaner?
Well, Dyson claims that the DC59, their latest cordless vacuum cleaner has that power from their new 350W digital motor that they call the V6.
Mashable goes one step further, saying it runs five times faster than a race car.

Update: Since I posted this article, Dyson has since released the V6, V7, V8 and V10 series.
The best deal in my opinion is the Dyson V7 MotorHead which has the same power as a V6 but is under $300. It’s a slight power bump and makes it easy to empty the dirt basket.
However, it does not come with the small turbo brush that will clean pet hair from upholstery.

What did Dyson upgrade in DC59?
Well, they lightened it by 0.3 pounds, made the dirt box 3.84 ounces larger, widened the floor tool by an inch and a half, and extended the runtime by 6 minutes (however, the boost remains at 6 minutes).
It uses the same Nickel Cobalt Manganese battery as the DC44.
All of these improvements come at a price premium — roughly $315.
Features at a glance
- Uses the new 350W Dyson Digital V6 engine

- 3.5 hours charging time
- 28Aw / 100Aw Normal / Boost mode
- The robotic floor tool has a large clearance width of 9.8 inches
- Uses a re-engineered 22.2 V Nickel-Manganese Cobalt battery with an extra power of 1.5

Positives
- Runs 6 minutes longer than DC44
- Powerful motor that produces 100W of air in boost mode which is very close to the power of a corded vacuum
- Slightly larger dustbin compared to previous Dyson
- Motorized wide floor tool
- Very light and comfortable
- It has two floor attachments that work on hardwood, carpet, linoleum, tile, carpet, and a variety of surfaces.
- The filter can be removed without removing the dirt container – this saves time

Negatives
- very expensive
- Short term time in boost mode
- Although Dyson made the dirt container larger, it is still small compared to other vacuum cleaners
- It can’t stand alone like other stick brooms
- The battery cannot be removed
What do you expect from the Dyson DC59?
To give you a quick overview of the difference between the DC59 and 44, take a look at the chart I made below.
You’ll see that the DC59, while larger, is actually about half a pound lighter.
That’s because it uses more carbon fibers that provide the structural integrity you need to withstand vibrations caused by the engine spinning at over 110,000 rpm (taken from the Mashable article).
Despite some consumer complaints, Dyson still uses the same actuation mechanism as its power switch to maximize uptime.
This engine is powered by a new 350W V6 engine that spins at 110,000 rpm. It is the second Dyson to use a bi-level cyclone system. This will help filter out fine dust particles and keep the main filter clean for longer.
To see how the DC59 is cleaned, watch this video…
The Dyson in the video is actually the DC59 MotorHead which has an older, less powerful cleaning head. I just want to share with you what kind of performance to expect from this.
Is the Dyson DC59 the same as the V6?
Yes, both DC59 and V6 engines are the same machine. In essence, the DC59 and the V6 are the same machine. They both have the same motor and filter, so the power is the same. The difference will be the tools that come with this.
One big difference is the soft cylinder head on the V6 production line that works great on hard floors. You can find this tool specifically in the V6 Fluffy which is great if you don’t have any carpet at home.
Attachments and accessories
Similar to the Dyson DC44, it comes with a small machine tool, collector and floor tool that is an inch wider than the previous Dyson.
Shipping time
Charging will take about 3.5 hours.
Filter cleaning
Dyson has made it easier to remove the filter than older models. Watch these videos on how to do it…

the show length
If you use it in normal mode, expect about 26 minutes on average, and less if you use the motorized brush tool extensively. In boost mode because it uses 3 times more energy, that number drops to 6 minutes.
Guarantee
Comes with a two-year warranty. Don’t lose your warranty card and don’t forget to register your Dyson.

bare floor performance
This is an interesting video comparing the DC59 to the Gtech AirRam (which Dyson claims to have only 4 Aw in the cleaner head).
Remember, this is a demo made in a Dyson lab, so treat it with caution.

carpet performance
Similar to the previous DC44 model, the motorized brush consists of two main parts, the rubber squeegee and carbon fiber bristles that respectively stir and capture debris.
Remember, this is a brand new design that they have widened – nearly 10 inches, which makes it as wide as some wire blanks.
pet hair
Reviews from pet owners were very positive, not only because it can pick up pet hair and human hair, but they also mentioned that it didn’t clog easily and wasn’t difficult to clean.
You can use the small turbo brush to brush the hairs on the fabric upholstery. The main cleaning head does a good job on carpets.
Another attachment is also capable of removing pet hair.
carpets
You won’t have any problem with short to medium rugs, but you may have some problems with thick, plush rugs.
Use it to apply reinforcement to plush rugs.

What do consumers say?
Since this is just a new product, only a few people have left a review on Amazon. But expect this number to increase as more and more people acquire this.
Consumers love this because it is light. If you compare it with a vertical broom, then the difference between night and day.
One concern for some may be a trigger switch that may strain the finger and wrist because you constantly need to press for power. But the trigger design has been improved over the years and is now as light as a feather.
Cleaning performance was top notch with everyone on Amazon saying it was great at cleaning up dust, dirt, and pet hair.
Although there was one consumer who mentioned that it does not work well on thicker carpets.
Don’t expect this to deeply clean thicker steps or carpets.
The two-level radial cyclone filters fine dirt and dust. So if you have some kind of allergy problem, this is a good option.
Another drawback here as noted by consumers is the lack of operating time – only 26 minutes (6 minutes on boost) and the very high price.
Another concern is the small dirt bin that has to be emptied frequently, and one positive thing about this is that Dyson has added a feature that allows you to remove the transparent container so it can be washed.
Reviews from other sites
John Lewis
Similar to what consumers on Amazon have said, people who left a review on John Lewis appreciated the lightweight nature of this product especially those in their 60s who couldn’t carry an existing weight.
Comments on cleaning performance were also positive with one consumer saying it didn’t scratch their hardwood floor and another saying that even on normal it still got picked up a lot.
I only saw one negative review here that says it was only able to clean 1.5 rooms and decided to return it but still says it has great suction.
Trusted Reviews
Luke Johnson, who posted the review here, said similar is the right word when comparing the power of the Dyson DC59 to a conventional vacuum cleaner.
In their tests using the normal mode it worked well on the regular rug but would struggle somewhat on the plush rug, this is where the boost mode comes in as it was able to remove the dirt in the plush rug, the downside to this is that it only lasts 6 minutes.
They recommend this product for small homes due to its 20 minute runtime.
Mashable
Got a “Mashable Choice” award from you, you guessed it, the popular tech blog Mashable.
Pete Patchal really liked how lighter this was than the previous DC44 and although it still had enough power to clean his living room rug.
Even his 4-year-old son had no trouble picking him up and cleaning the ground coffee in the kitchen.
Here’s a demonstration of how to make it simple.
lint pocket
They have tested the sugar on different surfaces and reported that they had no problems picking it up.
While they liked the suction power, they said the runtime is particularly short in boost mode and would be great for smaller homes.
They also mentioned that the battery cannot be replaced which is a big problem for me at least because if it fails you will have to replace everything or go to a Dyson service center to get it fixed.
Where can I buy this?
You can buy the Dyson DC59 Animal on Amazon for less than $315. And you’ll be eligible for free 2-day shipping if you join Prime.
They also sell extended warranties if you want extra peace of mind up to 3 years!
to finish
While other brands claim their products have been connected to power, this is probably the closest based on written reviews and videos I’ve found online.
This is despite one caveat – it will only last 26 minutes (less if you use the floor tool extensively) and 6 minutes in boost.
Expect to pay a large premium, too.
This is great for owners of small apartments to medium sized homes who are looking for a versatile, lightweight cleaner that will not only clean floors and stairs but with a long extension wand, it will suck cobwebs from your ceiling.
