If you’re familiar with the Platinum BDH2000FL 20-volt that I reviewed a few months ago, this is the big brother.
The funny thing is that although it is an older version, it has more power at 25W antenna!
The newer BDH2000FL has about 22 watts antenna.
What’s the difference then?
“Flex Vac” as it is more commonly known, apart from being cheaper, has a NiCad 12 volt battery.
So in case of failure, you should bring this to a B&D service center for a replacement or replace the entire unit itself if it is under warranty.
The good news is that this vacuum cleaner comes with a two-year warranty, so you don’t have to worry about repair bills for that time period.

What do you expect from the Black and Decker FHV1200?
This lightweight and convenient vacuum cleaner has a very good power – about 25 watts of air.
To put this into perspective, the Dyson DC44 in normal mode is rated at around 28 air watts, so in essence this approximates the power of the Dyson.
It features a 4ft flexible hose which makes it one of the most versatile vacuum cleaners on the market today.
The hose allows you to apply more pressure on the upholstery – this is useful when cleaning things like pet hair and dander.
You can remove the hose to reach hard-to-clean areas like sofa cushions. This feature makes it a great choice for cleaning the interior of your vehicle.
Attachments and accessories
Comes with a total of 3 – crevice tool, brush/nozzle tool and pet hair tool.
Charging takes a long time, about 21 hours.
Since this device uses a nickel-cadmium battery, do not operate it until it is completely exhausted or else the battery cells will reverse and damage the cells – this will shorten the battery life significantly.
Emptying this is a straightforward process.
- Pull the door latch to open
- Remove the “pre-filter” (this is the plastic that covers the filter)
- Remove the filter (yes, it is washable, use warm soapy water)
- Click firmly to remove dirt stuck inside the dirt container
For certain types of debris that have a lot of static charges such as hair and saw dust, you may need to use your fingers to remove it.
Note that the filters are not HEPA rated, so they will not filter out allergens.
the show length
Most consumers report a low runtime of 2-20 minutes.
The majority of reviews have been reported around 5-10 minutes – just to give you a basic number.
Black & Decker will offer a two-year warranty on the vacuum cleaner and battery.
bare floor performance
This product has been specifically designed for spot cleaning. No more, no less.
The powerful suction works great for picking up cob nets, dust bunnies, and all kinds of small debris, but it can struggle with larger debris like crushed Doritos or nachos or shop debris like sawdust and bolts — and tends to bounce back.
Despite the strong suction, don’t expect it to clean large areas of carpet.
The uptime is not enough to do more than clean a few places here and there.
This would be ideal for cleaning wall edges and baseboards, and is the perfect complement to a robot vacuum if you own one.
Pet hair removal
A number of the owners were quite happy with the way the pet hair facility handled pet hair. It has an unusual design but it did the job.
No, it doesn’t use a motorized brush like the more expensive brands but just relies on your excitement to get the job done.
This works well on fabric upholstery, an area pets usually like to spend time in…
Here’s a demonstration of how it works inside the car

The Flex Vac has over 400 reviews on Amazon alone, and most agreed that it has above-average suction power for a handheld device.
What pulls the rating down is the uptime or lack thereof. Most consumers get 5 to 10 minutes before the suction begins to wear off.
Can be up to 20 minutes
The longest run I saw was around 20 minutes which is pretty good for a NiCad based vacuum.
Another negative factor here is the charging time, you have to charge it for 21 hours or basically leave this thing plugged in.
Do not operate it until the battery is empty, or it will lose its life.
Remember that the battery is included, so when it fails, you will have to bring it to a B&D service center for a replacement or order a new one (if it is under warranty).
Runtime issues aside, consumers love the flexible hose that allows them to use it in vents and blinds, two of the most difficult areas to clean in the home.
If you own a car, the hose will work just as well.
The crevice tool works great for getting into corners but is not long enough to reach ceilings (if your home has a high ceiling feature).
Reviews from other sites
It received an overall B+ rating. The editors at Good Housekeeping say it has enough suction power to clean the floor, carpet, and pet hair from those surfaces.
However it was very noisy and hard to use.
A total of 14 people left a review and most liked it because it’s lightweight and has a small footprint plus a 4ft flexible hose really helps them move this around tight areas around their homes and cars.
Pet owners love how this broom sniffs pet hair. The biggest downside is the short run time.
black and double decker
It got around 40 reviews in the online Black and Decker store, and most consumers said it had strong suction power straight from the charger.
Some commented that they preferred this over a heavy standing vacuum or a canister although the strength varied because it was so portable.
Pet owners also loved how you helped them manage pet hair.
The biggest drop for B&D consumers is uptime, with some getting as little as 5 minutes and considering the charging time was over 21 hours, you’ll understand why they were disappointed.
But understand that all types of vacuum cleaners are designed to be topical cleaners.
Over 160 consumers left a review here and the majority were positive – they stated that it was portable, lightweight, good for pet hair, had good suction and an overall great spot cleaning tool.
Uptime is a big issue with consumers. Some easily got more than 10 minutes and it is suitable for a vacuum cleaner with a NiCad battery.
One consumer even said it must go through 4 to 5 charge cycles in order to achieve peak uptime.
Here’s a video review from a Waltermart consumer…
Where can I buy this?
You can buy this from Amazon for less than $150 and it will be eligible for free 2-day shipping if you join Prime.
Extended warranties are also available for up to 3 years if you want that extra peace of mind.
While this vacuum is by no means perfect, it will still work thanks to its intuitive design and power.
This would be a great complement to other types of vacuums that may have a hard time cleaning upholstery, drapes, wall edges, and other hard-to-reach areas.
Make sure the battery is not completely drained so it will last longer.
It comes with a two-year warranty, so combine it with the price tag (under $70), which makes it one of the best deals we have right now on the market.
Other brands can only give you 1 year warranty.
