How to choose upright?

Over the past five years or so, manufacturers have actively sought ways to compete with one over the other. And they’ve come up with crazy features that improve maneuverability and reach. But it still retains the cleaning performance one should expect from a portrait.

Of course when you think of innovation, the first brand that comes to mind would be Dyson. But surprisingly, they got beaten up by Shark as I’ll explain later as I detail why I categorized the various blanks as such.

What are the things you should think about?

1. Price

First and foremost, you should always set a budget because upright brooms will vary in price point.

You can buy one for a price ranging from $60 to $600 and features will vary. Once you set the budget, it will be easier for you to settle on a model depending on the features it has.

2. Does your home have wall-to-wall carpeting?

If your home has wall-to-wall carpeting, you’ll want to choose a model with a motorized brush (along with a separate motor running on it) because without one, the machine won’t be able to clean dirt trapped underneath deep in strands of carpet.

In short, only surface dirt will be cleaned.

3. How big is your house?

People who live in large homes definitely need an upright due to its range and strength (if you have carpeting).

Make no mistake that a cordless only helps clean high-traffic areas.

If you can afford one, consider it a worthwhile investment because these machines are light and easy to move which makes it easy to get them out.

Another consideration if you are busy is robotic vacuums because they are independent. And the latest generations are smart enough to clean several rooms.

You will need a vertical pick with a long power cord, long hose and extension wand to clean not only floors but also above floor surfaces such as ceiling vents and ceiling fans.

Small homeowners may choose something more elegant and lightweight for easier storage.

4. Do you have any pets?

It can be difficult to keep up with pet hair and it depends on the number of dogs in your home.

You may want to vacuum with a specialized tool to clean pet hair not only on floors but also on upholstery.

Some models such as the Dyson Cinetic and Shark Navigator Powered Lift Away have the tools to handle this task.

The newer will be a few hundred dollars cheaper, so pick one that fits your budget.

Our pick: Shark Navigator Electric Lifting System (NV752)

The Shark Navigator Powered Lift Away NV752 is perhaps the most versatile in use today. It has a lift feature that converts this from a vertical to a canister. This feature is what makes this unique among all the options available here. The beauty of this feature is that you can use the main cleaning head even in canister mode.

What makes this a good option?

  • One of the most versatile upright vacuums available today
  • Gives you the power of an upright position with the reach of the can
  • Large Capacity Dirt Container
  • Works best on an open floor
  • LED headlights aid visibility

some issues

  • It does not work as well on carpets as it does on bare floors
  • Filtration is not as good as Dyson

I think Shark has produced a winner with the Navigator Powered Lift Away.

Here’s why, this product will not only allow you to convert from portrait to canister.

But it also gives you the option to use a powered master brush roller.

This feature alone gives it unparalleled versatility in terms of what you can clean.

The power lifting feature basically allows users to remove the bulky dirt tray from the main body, which saves a lot of space. So you can clean hard-to-reach areas like spaces under furniture or chairs.

Watch this video to see what I mean…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sPafsCbaJ8

I forgot to mention that it comes with a pouch where you can put the mega capsule. Use the extension wand in addition to the prime mover head to clean carpeted surfaces under large furniture such as beds.

This is like the Dyson V6 which contains steroids. This feature alone is worth the price of this product. But you will get more than that.

Great for pet hair

It also comes with a small motorized pet grooming tool that works great for cleaning stubborn pet hair, making it one of the best (bagless) vacuums for cleaning pet hair…

Even with just a few passes, the pet tool was able to pick up almost all of the pet’s hair. This is impressive for an air powered tool.

This tool was able to capture all the cat’s fur in a few passes. It’s pretty impressive for something that’s powered by air.

One of the problems I’ve had with cleaning dust on hard floor surfaces is the lack of visibility.

It has LED lights on both the main tool and also the handle which is greatly helpful in tracking dust bunnies on hardwood or upholstery.

This is just one of the many reasons why you should consider this the main cleaner for your home.

Not as expensive as Dyson

The great thing about Shark is that it’s not as expensive as Dyson.

You’ll get the same suction power plus much more versatility for just a few hundred dollars. Did I already convince you? Well, you will have to read the entire review to see in detail how it works.

There is also a new version released called DuoClean Powered Lift Away. The features are similar but this one has the DuoClean header which has better agitation.

The DuoClean head combines a soft roller applicator and a bristled brush that pulls dirt into the suction chamber. This design works well on bare floors to clean larger portions of dirt without plowing. However, this technology comes at a higher price – $330 at Amazon.

minimum

In our opinion, this is the best vertical vacuum in terms of versatility and cleaning performance. If you want something cheaper than a Dyson but still delivers similar performance, this is a no-brainer option.

It doesn’t have a bag, so if you’re allergic, you’d be better off with something with a bag like the Kenmore Elite.

This may also be the best vertical with attachments because it has all the tools you’ll need to clean nooks and crannies, and it comes with a small motorized attachment capable of cleaning upholstery as well as your mattress – for the price, you’ll need to get a lot of this product.

Raise the Budget Away: Shark Navigator Lift-Away

The Navigator Lift Away was one of the first Shark rolls to incorporate a “Lift Away” feature. It is not as feature-rich as the NV752 but it is much cheaper. This variant comes with a similar versatility but you can use the main cleaning head to set the case.

What makes this a good option?

  • Cheaper Than Shark Navigator Electric Lifting System
  • Offers vacuuming versatility in a vertical pack
  • The 30-foot long power cord eliminates the need to constantly plug and unplug
  • Works well on carpets and bare floors

some issues

  • Less powerful than NV752
  • You can use the main cleaning head to put the canister

If the Navigator Powered Lift Away is still too expensive for your taste, here’s another option.

It gives you the same benefit as the Lift Away but without the option to use a main motorized floor tool so it won’t be as versatile as an electric lift.

Versatility like electric hoist

It will give you the same cleaning versatility in terms of being able to clean stairs. and various types of upholstery with motorized mini tool attachment.

It still comes with similar attachments like a brush and dusting brush to go along with the extension wand and the small motorized tool.

The trash can is HEPA filtered but it is bagless and there is still exposure to dust and allergens.

The power cord is decent at 25 feet. But it’s still shorter than the Shark Powered Away crane at 30 feet.

Deal

All of this will equate to a price tag of just under $160 which is a bargain if you ask me because it still comes with the same 5-year warranty.

Choose this if budget is your primary concern as it is still just as powerful and offers about 80% versatility.

It does not contain the latest technology found in the Shark Navigator Powered Lift Away and DuoClean. But it still performs well enough to warrant your consideration.

minimum:

If you have a smaller home with both hardwood and carpet, this upright position will do a great job. Plus, it comes with a lift feature that makes this able to clean areas that traditional struts won’t reach such as the car’s interior or sunroofs.

Best erect packed? Kenmore 31150 Elite

The Kenmore 31150 Elite is one of the best upright vacuum cleaners available at $200. There are better cleaning options like the Sebo X5 but the cost of that is much higher. If you want something relatively affordable, take a closer look at this one.

What makes this a good option?

  • A great cleaning tool for people with allergies because it is a packaged vacuum cleaner
  • Able to deep clean carpets
  • Large capacity bags mean you don’t have to replace them often
  • 5 year long warranty

some issues

  • Not as versatile as the Shark rolls I showed above
  • This heavy and bulky vertical is only intended for homes with a lot of carpet

If you have a serious case of allergic rhinitis, inhaling the dust particles can be a trigger for constant sneezing that can be quite annoying.

Even with a HEPA filter, these rolls do not have a bag, so there is exposure to allergens.

The Kenmore Elite is one of the best performing upright vacuum cleaners based on consumer reviews. It comes with a pouch that protects users from exposure to allergens.

More power than other rolls

Thanks to its 3D induction motor, Kenmore claims this machine produces three times more power than other vertical cleaners, and the technology also eliminates the need for a drive belt.

This allowed the engineers at Kenmore to expand the brush roll and give consumers the task of lower maintenance (which is to replace the belt).

The suction is so good that some people have stated that this is unusable for throw rugs because you can’t move it.

I don’t know about you but I would like to have strong suction suction in my broom instead of weak suction. To address the problem above, there is a hack that allows you to adjust the suction so you can use it on area rugs.

If you’re home with wall-to-wall carpeting, this vacuum cleaner will be a great tool for keeping those areas clean. It doesn’t matter if the pile is low or plush, it will be able to do the job thanks to the 4-position height adjustment.

LED helps with vision

It also comes with LED headlights to help you track dusty areas and aid overall visibility.

The dirt sensor tracks areas with dirt but does not work as advertised.

Since this machine is bulky, you will not be able to use it to deep clean the areas under the furniture.

There is no rotary steering, so maneuverability is affected.

It comes with a hose, extension wand, and a small motorized tool so you can use it to clean pet hair from upholstery. But the short 6-foot hose limits access.

The biggest problem for me would be the short one year warranty only.

While other manufacturers offer at least a 5-year warranty for their mounts, Kenmore offers only a 1-year warranty. This is a bit baffling to me because they rely on their strong sales reputation.

minimum:

If you want a great upright performance case, look no further than the Kenmore Elite but the short warranty is a major concern.

Another budget option: Electrolux Precision Brushroll

The Electrolux Precision Brushroll is a great budget option if you don’t want to spend more than $200 for an upright. You won’t beat more expensive rolls with the ability to deep clean but you don’t need to spend a lot. The performance is decent enough to keep your carpet clean and allergens from accumulating.

What makes this a good option?

  • A great budget option if you don’t want to spend more than $200 for a portrait
  • It has the function of cutting coiled hair on the brush barrel without the need of scissors
  • Equipped with a HEPA filter
  • Good performance on the carpet

some issues

  • Huge and lacks no rotating steering

In the world of lists, brands like Dyson, Kenmore and Miele dominate the marketing space.

But there are brands such as Shark and Electrolux that produce high-quality products at competitive prices.

They also back their products with extended warranties to give you extra peace of mind that the dollars you spend will last for years.

The Electrolux Precision Brush is another model you should look at when it comes to upright vacuums.

No more tangled brushes

It has a unique feature that will help take out the most tedious task of owning a Roller Brush Cleaner – cutting coiled hair.

Yes, thanks to the brush’s roller cleaning feature that cuts and then sucks up any hair or debris stuck there, you don’t need to get on your knees to clean it yourself.

Adjusting the height also allows you to adjust the clearance in case you want to clean larger bits of debris like crushed biscuits.

Floor cleaning

It also comes with a long flexible hose with two attachments – the brush tool and the multi-tool that allows it to clean upholstery, stairs and air vents.

The best part about this product is the price, at just over $210 (used). You will get a versatile vacuum cleaner for cleaning floors, bare carpets as well as upholstery. A very good deal at the price point, plus you get a long 5-year warranty.

minimum:

Bargain hunters will love this vacuum because it has features found in high-end vacuum cleaners. But it won’t cost much. These features include a HEPA filtration system and a time-saving brush roller cleaning system.

Filter without: Dyson Cinetic Large Ball

The Dyson Cinetic Large Ball is the only one currently available that does not contain any pre-engine filter. This means that you do not have to wash any filters for the life of this machine. But you will need to replace two vertical motor filters inside the ball. The biggest drawback for me is that this variant doesn’t have as much power as the older Dyson Ball Animal 2 which has more than 300 watts of antenna. This one only has a 195 watt antenna.

What makes this a good option?

  • Good agitation and power for deep carpet cleaning
  • The filter-free design eliminates the need to clean the pre-engine filter
  • Despite its huge size, it is easy to move this upright thanks to the ball design
  • Large dirt capacity
  • It has two HEPA filters

Some potential issues

  • Enjoy less card than the cheaper Dyson Ball Animal 2
  • Some long-term concern of the film system

In terms of innovation, it’s hard to dismiss Sir James Dyson and the big movie ball is evidence that Dyson is constantly pushing to bring innovative products to consumers.

Cinetic is the latest in Dyson’s vertical line.

No more filters

And the innovation they bring is a cleaning system that doesn’t require a pre-engine filter thanks to Dyson’s so-called film science.

The fictional term Dyson is used in film science to describe tips that vibrate up to 350 times per second to prevent the buildup of fine dust.

To put it in layman’s terms, these tips shake up dust particles as they enter the dirt basket so they don’t accumulate in one area. Engineers say this is like pouring baking soda onto a sieve. When you’re not shaking the sifter, there will be a buildup of baking soda, so you’ll need to shake it to remove any buildup.

But what Dyson hasn’t clearly told you is that this machine has a post-engine HEPA filter and you still need to clean it sometimes…

Actually there are two of them.

You’ll notice that the part inside the ball is really sloppy, and Dyson’s claim of no loss of suction isn’t really accurate.

When you look at carpet and hardwood test videos, this machine is capable of cleaning dirt.

Kode1996 may have opened a whole can of worms with this discovery and hopefully Dyson will address this soon.

I still include this in the top five mainly because of an innovation without a filter but it’s far from perfect.

In terms of cleaning performance, this vacuum works. But the science cinema filtration system looks pretty good on paper but doesn’t actually filter every last bit of allergens that you go through.

Based on the video I saw on YouTube, the dust particles will remain inside the ball. This is where the HEPA and motor filters are located.

So this vacuum cleaner is no less filtering as Dyson claims. The higher price point makes it difficult to rank this higher.

minimum:

Superb high-tech film filter system, rock cleaning performance. But in reality allergens can still pass through the after-engine HEPA filters and will clog them if you don’t clean them. Dyson could be more transparent with this feature but it is what it is.

Are there any wireless options?

Many have tried but failed to achieve it. Hoover has produced two products that work for people looking for a high-traffic cleaning tool.

Remember that these products will not compare with Vertical in terms of strength. But it makes up for it with its versatility and maneuverability.

Wireless and Wireless Hoover Elevator

The Hoover Air Cordless Vacuum Cleaner and Air Cordless Lift usher in the next generation of cordless stick vacuums. It will have the same versatility as the Dyson but with a larger dirt container, so you don’t need to empty it as often. Note that these Hoovers will not have the same power as the Dyson.

What makes this a good option?

  • No cords included – you can bring this anywhere in your home without having to look for a plug
  • Good size cordless vacuum cleaner
  • Lift feature converts this from vertical to a canister that increases reach
  • Two removable batteries reduce downtime

Some potential issues

  • Lacks strength and will not deep clean carpet

The antenna wireless elevator combines two products. Vertical and canister in one neat package that requires no wires.

Hoover designed it to have a larger dirt container than a stick vacuum and still retain the versatility of cleaning upholstery, stairs, and the like.

The versatility of the vacuum cleaner thanks to the “Lift” feature that allows you to use the main cleaning head with the body separated.

This makes this alternative the more expensive option between the two.

Compared to other cordless vacuums that work between 15 and 30 minutes, this one will last longer.

With two 20V Li-ion batteries, this cleaner will give you 50 minutes of runtime from the two batteries combined. This is more than enough for any spot cleaning task.

In terms of cleaning performance, it performed better than DC44 on carpets…

Other than that, it also has a wider cleaning path – this means fewer passes back and forth since it covers more area.

But the downside to this is the suction power. It still doesn’t match their wired counterparts in terms of pure suction power.

Also, the limited runtime won’t allow you to clean a medium to large home, especially if it has wall-to-wall carpeting.

other options

Another option is the Hoover Air Cordless. This cordless lift is similar to the Air Cordless Lift but does not have a lift feature that turns it into a cylinder vacuum cleaner. Runtime and cleaning performance remain the same. This alternative is cheaper compared to the “elevator” because it is less versatile.

minimum: If you live in a small house with mostly bare floors and simple carpeting or you live in a mobile home where there is no power outlet, this would be a great, lightweight and portable alternative.

It’s cheaper than Dyson but still delivers the same cleaning performance.

to finish

Upright brooms have come a long way since these Hoover machines appeared in the early 1900s. These machines are necessary indoors with carpets. But it was heavy and had only one job – cleaning the floors.

The recent listings are a testament to the innovative minds behind the biggest brands in the industry.

It will be the most innovative shark. They’ve unlocked a treasure chest of features that have transformed a once massive gadget into a total cleaning monster that can nearly everything inside your home.

Why shark?

Shark’s latest listings include the DuoClean Lift Away and the Rotator Powered Away that combine the strength of a vertical shaft with the versatility of a case.

Their engineers have developed a so-called “electric lift” feature that allows users to use the main cleaning head even with the case detached.

This really expands the reach of these two products to clean stairs and deep under furniture. It’s something the other products on this list can’t do.

The DuoClean costs $330 and the powered rotary lift is about $290. You can save money by choosing to renew.

If these two types of sharks are too pricey, look no further than the Shark Navigator Lift Away, it’s much cheaper. It will not allow you to use the head of the main floor in Lift Away mode. But it offers comparable versatility for cleaning multiple areas above the floor.

Kenmore is a good option packed

For those of you who prefer a boxed vacuum cleaner, the Kenmore Elite is much cheaper. This vertical base will deeply clean carpets and absorb anything that gets in its way. It has a bit of versatility with the aluminum telescopic stick but lacks reach.

The biggest problem is the weight – it weighs about 20 lbs!

Electrolux is another budget option that works decently but only cleans floors.

Don’t sleep on Dyson

Ditto for Dyson Cinetic, it’s easily the most expensive of the bunch here. Film-science technology that eliminates the pre-engine filter looks promising. But it is expensive.

If you want something without any wires, Hoover has two products just for you – the Air Cordless and the Air Cordless Lift. These two products have the same design principle as Shark Lift Away.

The ability to separate the container from the body allowing you to use it like a vacuum cleaner. The wireless elevator is more versatile as it will allow users to use the main head even with the enclosure separated. But it is also more expensive.

Just in case I missed something or you have any suggestions on how to improve the list here, feel free to comment on them below.
