How to choose a replacement Roomba battery?

Before choosing one, be sure to decide what model of Roomba you have. You can find this information under the robot above the right wheel (see image below).

Once you have this information, go to Amazon, eBay, or wherever you prefer to buy from the store.

1. Check the model before buying

Before hitting the buy button, be sure to check and double check if the battery is compatible with your Roomba robot. The last thing you want is to buy the wrong battery and waste time getting it shipped back to the seller.

I have listed the models that are compatible with each battery, but it is best to double-check with the same dealer store.

2. Choose the right type

There are two types of batteries sold – NiMH battery and Li-ion battery. Li-ion is a newer technology that takes less time to recharge and usually lasts longer. It is less prone to fading, easier to maintain, and lasts longer compared to a NiMH battery.

But it is more expensive than an equivalent NiMH battery.

3. Get a brand new battery

Always choose a brand new battery. The allure of a renewable (or regenerated) battery is cheaper, but its history is unknown, and for an important part like a battery, it’s wiser to spend more on a brand-new component rather than buyer’s remorse.

SPARCOOL 5300 mAh

This option is one of the most popular Li-ion options available and one of the least expensive. With its large capacity (5,300mAh), Sparklole claims it can run for up to four hours – more than any high-end robot vacuums like the Roomba S5 Max.

It has a recharge cycle of 1,000 times and a self-discharge rate of only 1%. The manufacturer claims that it will last up to two years without any issues and has a 35-day money-back guarantee as well as a 12-month limited warranty.

Melasta 5200 mAh

Another high-capacity option is the Melasta 5200 mAh. Melasta claims it will run between 1-2 hours on the Roomba 900 series and (up to) 3 hours on the 500, 600, 700 and 800 series.

The cycle life is impressive at 1200 cycles with built-in overcharge and overcurrent protection.

It comes with a 45-day money-back guarantee and a 12-month warranty.

TENERGY 5200MAH

Rounding out the Li-ion replacement options is the Tenergy 5200 mAh. It’s the most expensive option, but it does come with a few extras – 4 side brushes plus a brush cleaner.

However, Tenergy does not specify the number of charge cycles. It comes with a 12 month warranty, but no money back guarantee was mentioned.

The Powerextra 3800 mAh 14.4V replacement battery is one of the most popular Ni-Mh options. This model is compatible with select Roomba 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 series robots.

Besides the battery, you’ll also get four additional side brushes as well as two screws.

It has built-in features against overcharging and overdischarging. Powerextra offers a 30-day return policy as well as a 12-month warranty. They make no claims for uptime, but many consumers say it lasted up to 2.5 hours.

Please follow the manufacturer’s recommended procedures if you choose this option. This includes turning it on until it is completely empty.

MorePilot 4050 mAh

Another popular NiMh battery option on this list is the Moripilot 4050 mAh. This battery is rated at 14.4V and will last between 1.5 to 3 hours.

Moripilot says the battery capacity will remain at 80% after 500 cycles.

One of the disadvantages of using a NiMh battery is the low number of cycles. Assuming you use this bot once a day, it will retain 80% of its claimed uptime after 1.5 years.

You will need to charge this battery for 12 hours prior to initial use. As a bonus, you’ll get two extra side brushes, two screws, and a brush cleaning tool out of the box.

iRobot 1800 original

Now, let’s move on to the original iRobot battery options for Roomba. The first is the 1800 mAh Li-ion battery.

This model is compatible with a wide range of Roomba models, including the 614, 675, 690, 890, and 960. Also, it’s the default battery you’ll get from the newer batches of the 675, 690, and 960.

Don’t let low capacity stop you from getting this model. It’s the safest alternative if you don’t want to risk damaging the robot with a poor replacement battery.

XLife long battery life

The XLife is another option if you want a high capacity NiMH replacement battery from iRobot. Unfortunately, it’s a NiMH battery, but it’s an upgrade from the older NiCd used by older Roomba models.

It’s a 3000mAh NiMH battery, but iRobot doesn’t specify how long it will last. It will depend on the Roomba model.

It is also compatible with Roomba 500, 600, 700 and 800 series models, except for the 690 and 890.

caSino187 replacement 1800 mAh

We’ll have a look at caSino187 Replacement batteries for E and I . series robots To round out this comparison.

Since these models are relatively new to the market, there isn’t much in terms of battery replacement options.

The good news is that the E and I-Series robots use the latest Li-ion batteries from iRobot, so they should last several years.

Can the Roomba battery be replaced?

Yes, the battery of all Roomba products can be replaced. You can find batteries for even older models like the 500 series on Amazon and eBay – that’s how popular iRobot products are.

One of the things I love about Roomba products is the straightforward approach to battery replacement.

For older models such as the 690 or 675, you will have to remove the entire base plate to access the battery.

Some variants like the 980 or 960 are easy to replace since you only have to remove the battery cover.

How do you replace a Roomba battery?

The good news is that Roomba batteries are easy to replace. It involves removing some screws and then removing the base plate or battery cover to access the battery.

I have written guides based on the model. You can check out these below.

The Roomba 690’s steps are similar to the 614, 675, and other 600-series robots because they all have the same bolt pattern and battery position. Same with the 980 being similar to the 960.

How do I know if my Roomba needs a new battery?

There are some signs that the Roomba is running out of battery – shorter run time than usual, indicator lights not lighting up, low pickup.

If you experience any of these signs, try resetting the battery by pressing the Home, Clean, and Spot buttons simultaneously, then charge the robot for up to 72 hours.

For owners who have an older Roomba like the previous generation 650 series with Ni-Cad batteries, you may want to upgrade to Li-ion batteries if the batteries are bad.

Roomba battery maintenance tips

While Roomba replacement batteries aren’t that expensive, costs will go up if you replace them often.

To ensure longevity, these are some of the best practices.

  1. Use the bot a lot: iRobot recommends daily use to improve its service life.
  2. Keep it connected: Make sure to keep the robot in the charging base. These batteries have a built-in system that prevents overcharging and slows down slightly if full.
  3. Clean the robot regularly: Dirty components not only increase wear but also force the robot to work harder, thus consuming more battery. Make sure you have a schedule for cleaning the various components of the robot.
  4. Charge the robot as quickly as possible: Do not leave the robot undercharged or drained. Doing so will accelerate battery wear and tear. Charge the robot after each run and keep it fully charged.
  5. Remove the battery for extended periods of idle: If you are going on vacation and not using the robot for several months, remove the battery from the robot. Another option is to turn the robot off, but I prefer removing the battery to make sure it’s not completely drained. iRobot recommends removing NiMH batteries from the robot for extended storage.
  6. Full charge every six months: Piggy-backing at number 5, recharge the battery every six months to ensure optimal performance.
  7. Read the instructions carefully upon initial charging: Some manufacturers require you to charge and discharge two to three times completely during the initial stage. The process will be different depending on the manufacturer. The point is to read the manual carefully before using it.

What is the price of Roomba battery?

The cost depends on the model and whether you buy a Ni-Cad or Li-ion battery. Batteries for newer options like the E5, I7, or S9 will cost more.

For older options, such as the 600 series, OEM replacement batteries will cost less. These will typically cost less than $70 for Li-ion variants, and sometimes as little as $30 for Ni-Cad. But it’s just an approximate number, so it’s best to check the links for actual prices.

Roomba battery reset

One way to revive a dead battery is to perform a battery reset. For older models like the 600 and 900 series, it involves pressing the home + clean + positional buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.

Pressing these buttons will reset the robot to its factory settings. You will have to press Spot + home buttons to activate WIFI again.

If the reset doesn’t work, it’s time to buy a new battery.
