Robotic vacuums are one of the most innovative products of the 21st century.
I never thought in a million years that having Rosie in my house would be a reality.
But here we are and you will have literally hundreds of options.
If this is your first time looking for a robotic vacuum cleaner, I have made a leg up for you in researching and testing a robotic vacuum cleaner as well.
After spending over 20 hours researching and comparing with other robots, I feel that the Neato BotVac Connected is the best robot vacuum available right now.
It is not the cheapest but this WiFi enabled bot is one of the most efficient and best performing bots.
The laser distance sensor and SLAM algorithm combine to provide this with one of the most efficient and comprehensive cleaning performance.
with the release of Botvac D7BotVac Connected price went down.
In second place comes the Roomba 980 thanks to Navigation renewal that is now mraw efficiency. It’s not as powerful as BotVac Connected but in terms of cleaning performance, it’s not far behind.
One of the reasons it isn’t number one is the price. right Now , Roomba 980 It costs about $800, which is $100 more expensive than BotVac Connected.

New Hero: Neato BotVac Online
The Neato BotVac is probably the most efficient robotic vacuum cleaner available right now thanks to its laser sensor. It’s also one of the best performing standalone cleaners available and with the release of the D7, prices have gone down. If you want a business that cleans your home and has Alexa connectivity, this is a great option.
- This laser distance sensor makes it one of the most efficient and comprehensive robot cleaners available
- Great on bare floors or carpets
- It has Alexa and WiFi connectivity
- Cheaper now because of the BotVac D7
- Still expensive
- Carpets will not be deeply cleaned
Neato has worked hard to keep up with iRobot in its quest to be the best robotic vacuum on the market. and the BotVac Online Represents the latest and perhaps Best product so far.
Now with a side brush
When they unveiled BotVac . series A few years ago, they had a side brush to fit them Roomba Side brush to help their product better clean the edges.
In addition to the side brush, they also upgraded their navigation system. This alternative Also has a wider beater bar that will reach the edge.
While cleaning performance wasn’t an issue, the lack of a remote control was.
And with Roomba 980 now adding an app to their product, Neato had to step up their game and so BotVac Connected was born.
remote control robot
Adding the app is changing the way we view these devices and what the future holds.
This application uses the WiFi signal of the robot and the router which will allow you to control it remotely as long as you have an internet connection.
Neato has also put in a new lithium-ion battery that’s less prone to power fade. Older BotVacs use heavy NiCad batteries, have short runtime and don’t hold a charge well.
This means less power fade and more cleaning, but unfortunately, that doesn’t translate into longer run times.
Why is it number 1?
The main reason is twofold, the first is the price.
Roomba 980 is a very good product but very expensive. The Dyson 360 Eye, another competitor, features a more powerful engine, larger enclosure, and a high-tech navigation system. But all this will cost you more than 1000 dollars!!!
The second is performance. Neato still uses the same brush roll that works. And still one of the best on the market.
Here’s a video in action…
The BotVac Connected system is no different. Ryan Crist says it’s the best performing cleaning robot on the market right now and that includes the Roomba 980 and 880, although the 360 Eye wasn’t part of the testing.
big improvement It will be the most comprehensive navigation.
Bots older than Neato, especially the XV series, will only make one pass. This new robot will make two passes in both directions – horizontal and vertical. So that’s better in terms of accuracy and you’ll have a cleaner home.
This reduces the chance of losing anything as it travels in rows and columns – a more thorough method of cleaning.
The brush roller design is still high maintenance, especially if you have a lot of pets in the house. Be sure to clean it after every two uses depending on how much hair is in there.
The app also does not show you other details such as how long the robot has taken to clean or the status of the battery.
Error details are not shown. For example, if the robot stops in the middle of the cleaning cycle, it will just flash and the error code will appear. You will have to check the manual and decode the error code yourself.
As with all new technologies, these types of quirks are natural and hopefully will be ironed out in future updates.
to me price and features, It gives you, BotVac Connected is hard to beat. The addition of the WiFi-enabled app takes this to a whole new level. Neato has not changed Roll brush design that performs. But it does require maintenance to keep it working well. If you are You have 650 dollars or secondso To spend on a robot vacuum, this one is hard to beat.
More efficient: Roomba 980
The Roomba 980 is the first Roomba to feature a predictable back-and-forth cleaning thanks to the SLAM algorithm and the camera. It will not be as effective as Neato BotVac but it has been proven effective.
- The SLAM algorithm allows this robot to clean more efficiently than the older Roombas 800 and 600 series
- Rubber extraction tools require less maintenance than Neato’s bristle brush
- Has WiFi and Alexa compatibility – great in modern homes
- Don’t expect this carpet to clean deeply
In the previous generation of robotic vacuums, the Roomba used infrared sensors which resulted in a largely random cleaning pattern.
If you’re curious, the biggest difference between the 880 and 650 is the motorized brush and how it moves around the furniture.
650 more aggressive
The 650 was very aggressive in handling edges and corners which resulted in better cleaning performance.
But at the expense of scratches and dents on the furniture. So when they did research and development with the 880, they decided to call it back.
The cleaning performance was slightly affected but it resulted Less damage to furniture.
Sorry for the long introduction but I had to share so you can understand the evolution of this product.
The 980 has eliminated its infrared-based navigation system entirely and now uses a new system that combines infrared sensors with a camera on top to help locate it and the areas it has cleaned.
Why is it number 2?
Whereas previous Roomba robots roam aimlessly until the battery runs low, the 980 actually remembers the areas it’s cleaned thanks to the camera and avoids obstacles with the infrared sensors in front of the bumper.
This change allows this robot to have more efficient navigation compared to Roombas and Allows this robot to clean more space (yes multiple rooms) Without getting lost and entrapped, so babysitting space is less.
Here is a short video showing you the newly discovered efficiency of the 980…
All these features are combined with the iAdapt 2.0 navigation system and visual translation software that tracks its location. And even when you go to recharge, it will return exactly to the area where it was last cleaned and continue from there.
More powerful engine
Another improvement will be the stronger engine iRobot says it’s 10 times more powerful From the Roomba 650.
This is the only Roomba that has a carpet booster feature which is a fancy term meaning variable suction. Turn this feature on if you are cleaning carpets and turn it off on the bare floor.
However, turning on this feature reduces the run time from 120 minutes in normal mode to 90 minutes.
Longer run time
Neato manages to increase uptime due to Li-Ion batteries. Not only will this last longer, but it will keep its charge better. The power will be more consistent throughout the cleaning cycle.
iRobot has also abandoned the traditional remote control with the 980. It has been replaced by an app that is compatible with both IoS and Android devices.
What does this mean?
It simply means more comfort and flexibility.
You will no longer need to be in the same vicinity as the robot to use the remote control, as long as you have an internet connection. Could you Run the bot almost anywhere. You can also schedule the cleaning on its own at different times each day of the week.
What are the potential issues?
As with any camera-based navigation system, it relies heavily on light. In complete darkness, you may experience navigation issues and may not function as it was designed for.
The biggest issue for me will be the price, with this bot approaching $900 which is one of the most expensive on the market right now and about $200 more expensive than the Neato BotVac Connected.
If $900 is too much, You may want to take a look at Roomba 960.
It has almost the same features as the 980. But with a weaker motor and smaller battery.
This means that it is shorter but retains the same navigation and Wi-Fi features.
The Roomba 980 It represents the newest and best Roomba that it has to offer in terms of features, navigation and cleaning performance. This is the most efficient Roomba to date thanks to the camera and SLAM system that is smarter than any Roomba out there. It still uses the same bristle-free extractors as the 800 Series which means less tangling and very good cleaning performance.
Tangle-free brush: Roomba 860
The Roomba 860 is the newer version of my previous choice, the Roomba 880. This variant has a lithium-ion battery that will work and last much longer than the NiCad battery the 880 has. If you feel you need WiFi and Alexa connectivity, by all means go with a Roomba 890 is a little more expensive.
- A cheaper option than the Neato BotVac and Roomba 980
- It comes with a lithium-ion battery, so it will last longer than the older Roomba 880
- WiFi and connectivity compatibility
- Ineffective cleaning mode
although Roomba 770 Amazon’s bestselling robotic cleaner, iRobot was not satisfied.
They set out to create a new robotic broom using new, anti-rotating, bristles-free rubber “extractors”. And the new XLife battery, according to iRobot, will last twice as long.
Why is it number 3?
The biggest problem with bristles is that over time, hair, lint, and dirt get wrapped around it.
You will need special cleaning tools to clean and detangle the hair.
If you have ever used a vacuum cleaner with a motorized brush, you will understand this problem.
No more bristles
The Roomba 860 solves this problem by completely removing bristles from the brush. Instead use an “extractor” specifically designed to move and capture dirt and hair.
In terms of performance, it did not disappoint and also did well on CNet’s rice grain test.
It also got the best result in terms of picking up sawdust on hardwood. But she had a harder time with pet hair compared to BotVac.
So the last option will be the best option if you have a lot of pets at home. You can find the test results here.
What are the potential issues?
Even with the tangle-free extracts, long hair still tends to get wrapped around these extractors, just take a look at the pictures below…
So there is still some maintenance involved here but not quite as much as compared to old bristle brushes.
Another issue for me is the price. Although this sounds better and has more bells and whistles (virtual wall, remote control, etc.), the price is way too high for me.
Performance against Neato is roughly equal. But Roomba is less efficient and it will take longer to clean the room.
This would be great for the modern homeowner who loves to mess with technology like 880 It has an infrared remote control and beacons that act as a wall or door depending on the settings. A little pricey but still does the job.
Stylish for less: the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum Cleaner
Xiaomi’s first generation robot vacuum is probably the closest thing to the Neato BotVac available right now. And the best part is that you don’t have to spend $500. It has the same laser sensor and SLAM algorithm with a larger motor and battery. It lacks Alexa compatibility, however, but if that’s not a big deal for you, it’s a good option if you’re looking for something between $250 and $300.
- A cheaper option than Neato BotVac
- Better smartphone app than BotVac
- This large cell Li-ion battery gives this long runtime
- It has a HEPA filter
- No Alexa compatibility
- narrow cleaning brush
If you had told me five years ago that a Chinese brand could be complemented by a big brand like Neato, I would have laughed in your face. But Xiaomi has upped its game with its product known simply as the MI robot vacuum.
Based on my tests and research on this product Copied a lot of its features from Neato BotVac Connected And that’s not bad because more competition means better things for us as consumers.
At least they didn’t copy Neato’s D-shaped feature but everything else under the hood both robots are pretty much the same.
Same navigation as Neato
The The biggest similarity will be mobility Both Xiaomi and Neato Use LDS or laser distance sensor It scans its surroundings at a rate of 1800 per second.
This sensor builds a 360-degree environmental map, it is cleaning and mainly helps it to avoid collision with furniture.
Besides LDS, it also uses the synchronous localization and mapping algorithm found in Neato.
Basically, this robot helps track its location without the need for a camera to do so.
This allows this robot to operate even in complete darkness – a huge advantage over the camera-based navigation used by other brands such as Samsung and iRobot.
Why is it number 4?
One of the things I like the most about this product is the navigation especially after downloading the firmware update.
It combines efficiency and accuracy not found in random navigation robots such as Roomba 800 series or the ILIFE robot vacuum cleaner.
Watch this video to see what I mean…
You will notice that it goes through the cleaning cycle twice!
This increases cleaning performance twice!
I also like that the bot remembers exactly where the charging station is without any guesswork – that’s the SLAM algorithm at work here.
Large capacity battery
To go with the efficient cleaning style, Xiaomi also equipped this cleaning tool with a Large 5,200 mAh Li-ion battery That will last about 2.5 hours!
That’s about half an hour longer than Neato.
When you combine that with efficient cleaning, this robot can clean up to 250 square meters on a single charge.
When the battery runs low, it goes back to the charging base, refuels and then comes back where it left off and finishes the job.
wifi and app
Like the Neato BotVac Online And Roomba 980This bot also comes with an app Allows you to remotely schedule, monitor, and operate this robot’s cleaning Anywhere as long as you have an internet connection.
As for the scheduling feature, you can actually set it to clean multiple times each day. You can ask to clean it once in the morning, afternoon and evening.
But the downside is that the basic functionality is only available in Chinese and is a bit lacking in terms of responsiveness but it’s a very good first step for Xiaomi. Perhaps their future products will have a better and faster application.
The biggest problem for me would be the size of the trash. Despite its size, the container would have been a bit larger instead with a capacity of about 0.45 liters with a narrow opening that could have been a bit messy to empty.
Motorized brush too It is a bit tight compared to To the full width brush found in BotVac Connected. This means that it will be less efficient compared to Neato.
The final topic will be to clean the corner or not. Make no mistake this robot does a good job on straight edges but when it comes to cleaning corners, the rounded shape does a disservice to it. It makes me wonder why they didn’t adopt the D-shape of Neato.
This is legit – a true balanced version of Neato that will give roughly the same performance at half the cost. If you don’t mind the lack of corner cleaning and Chinese application, this is a very good product, it’s even a diamond in the rough. It does not come with the add-ons that Neato has but you can purchase these separately at GearBest.
Trusted old: iRobot Roomba 690
The Roomba 690 is the cheapest option on this list. It’s not the most complex but it’s a workhorse robot. Although there is no navigation expected in a BotVac or Roomba 980, this bot is very accurate. One bonus you will get is that it has WiFi and Alexa connectivity.
- Random cleaning pattern is very accurate
- Cheapest option on the list
- Compatibility with WiFi and Alexa
- Not a good choice if you want to clean several rooms
- Ineffective cleaning mode
Currently , Roomba 690 It is the cheapest Roomba robot available so far in Just under $300. In terms of features, this bot is pretty basic but comes with WiFi and Alexa connectivity, so if you value these features (who doesn’t), it’s a great choice. The cleaning performance is consistent with the 800 series since they both have random hopping patterns but it won’t be as efficient as the Neato Botvac series, Xiaomi or the Roomba 900 series.
Cheaper alternative to Roomba 900 . series
this will be Cheaper alternative but worth To the most expensive 900 Series Roomba That cost up to $800.
It has practically the same brush-and-go system that would work equally well based on the reviews.
If you take a look at the reviews, a lot of consumers who owned the 700-series Roombas also bought and said it performed as well as the 700-series!
This model is exactly same 630. The difference is that the 630 does not have a scheduling feature.
What are the negatives?
It has a rather small dirt container that needs to be emptied often. Reverse-spin brushes need to be cleaned more often to maintain performance because debris in certain hairs tends to get stuck on brush bristles, side brushes, and wheels. These three areas need frequent cleaning.
Overall this is a good product This is not as expensive as the newer 800 series models But she will perform close to him. You just have to keep in mind that it needs frequent TLC so it doesn’t wear down too quickly.
How to choose the right robotic vacuum cleaner?
Before I go into the list, you should know what a good robot vacuum should be. Here are 4 of the features you should have and why.
1. Shelf Sensors
These sensors prevent robots from falling down stairs or any “cliff” point such as stairs and permanently damaging themselves.
2. Self docking
When the battery is low, it tells the robot to return to the charging base to recharge and continue its mission without your help.
3. Intelligent navigation
This will dictate How efficient is the robot in cleaning the roomThe less time you need to clean, the more effective it will be. There are two types of navigation – random and predictable.
Robots that use infrared sensors will move in a random direction. These products are usually cheaper and more comprehensive, but they are not effective.
Newer robots that have a more efficient navigation system will Either using a camera or a laser sensor.
These will be more expensive due to the technology used. But be warned, some brands aren’t as scrupulous about cleaning which negates the purpose of a robot vacuum.
The main point of owning a robotic vacuum cleaner is automation, without this feature what is the point of having it?
WiFi and app bots give you more flexibility such as scheduling different times with the option to clean on specific days only.
How did we choose the finalists?
There are easily over 50 different types available on Amazon right now. Probably over 70 if you include those sold in Chinese stores like Ali Express and GearBest. And frankly, most brands are rubbish to put it frankly.
My job in this review is to narrow down those options for you. What I did was do a quick product search on Amazon to narrow down the options. Everything with over 170 reviews rated at least 4 stars that I shortlisted.
The most important metric we looked at is mobility and cleaning performance. Honestly, If the robot’s navigation is bad, it’s not worth buying.
So we put the navigation feature at a premium and all the variants will navigate here well enough to clean one room and head back to the base of the house.
Full disclosure: No, I haven’t tested every one of these but I’ve read reviews and watched reviews online to see how these products perform. Not only did I write this 4,000-word review but also the individual reviews for each of the five options if you need more information.
Is a robotic vacuum cleaner a good choice for cleaning my house?
The first generation bots suffered from reliability issues and didn’t seem to hold out for more than a few months.
But as technology improves, that is no longer the case.
New robots are better than ever
Newer robots are light years better in terms of reliability, navigation, and cleaning performance.
However, these machines will not replace traditional vacuum In terms of deep cleaning performance and strength.
Smartphones also play a huge role in technological advancement.
The latest bots have WiFi connectivity and apps for smartphones. This specification Allow you more control and access, even if you don’t actually exist. All you need is a router to connect your phone and Android.
Some of the latest products that have these features are Dyson 360 EyeAnd Neato BotVac OnlineAnd Roomba 980and the Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner.
These bots will help people who are busy with hectic schedules Outsourcing the cleaning task And Prevent dirt build-up.
As large as a maintenance type vacuum
But don’t count on this to be your primary cleanser. These machines They are at their best as maintenance tools Dirt will accumulate.
If you expect to do more, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.
You will appreciate these robots Because they don’t complain. And it will even clean tricky areas like the areas under the bed.
Without further ado, here is the list, five of the best automatic cleaners that will help your home stay clean even if you’re busy doing other things.
Before buying one set these expectations
Consumer Reports notes that vacuum types will not replace the traditional vertical vacuum.
Heck, it won’t replace a cordless vacuum. And while I agree with them, This is not the main point of buying a robotic vacuum cleaner.
Great for monotonous tasks
These machines are great because they will do a monotonous task over and over again without getting tired.
With the right setup, you don’t even need to vacuum every day. If your home has carpeting, independent cleaners will clean heavy traffic areas and prevent dirt buildup.
Not a deep cleanser
Don’t expect a deep cleaning performance From a robot because it is not possible. Even Dyson 360 Eye won’t deep clean carpets. So let’s define this expectation from the start. You will still need a file upright decent Or a vacuum cleaner for deep cleaning tasks.
Don’t forget to check out our review at Best carpet cleanerwhile you are at it. These tools will well together in keeping your carpet clean.
Yes, these products are expensive but this guide will help you get the best value for what you pay.
Neato BotVac sets the standard for robotic vacuums even if they are high-tech and expensive Roomba 980 And Dyson 360 Eye I can’t be defeated.
Why Roomba 980?
It features a wider side brush than the 980’s which translates to a wider cleaning path, the same predictable cleaning style that has made it so popular among consumers, and here’s the clincher – it’s cheaper than the Roomba.
In terms of cleaning performance, you can flip and coin between the two and there won’t be much difference. They both have the same effective pattern but spin around it differently.
How is Neato and Roomba navigation different
Neato is based on a laser-guided sensor while Roomba He does it with the camera. They are both good at what they do and you can’t go wrong with either. But if you feel like spending nearly $800 on a vacuum is too much, you can Choose cheaper variants such as the Roomba 960 or the BotVac D5.
The real budget option at least when relatively speaking to both Roomba and Neato would be the Xiaomi or MI robot vacuum.
she has Similar features as Neato in terms of navigation But it has a rounder body and a narrower cleaning path, and the price difference will make you stop and think. Check out the videos I recorded for the MI robot vacuum and see for yourself.
