Posted on May 21, 2022 by admin

Some of the most powerful deep cleaning vacuums on the market are also the heaviest.

Take, for example, a rainbow broom. This monster of a vacuum weighs about 20 pounds.

And while it’s one of the most versatile machines you can buy, it’s not easy to carry it up and down stairs.

Here’s another example – Dyson struts although one of the most effective deep cleaning machines is not light.

The DC65 Animal in all its power and excitement still weighs 17 pounds which doesn’t sound like much.

But if you have a two- or three-story home, carrying this down can take a toll on your shoulders, arms, and back.

The good news is – a good vacuum doesn’t have to be heavy to be strong. In fact, some of the best performing vacuum cleaners on the market now weigh less than 10 pounds.

And some models will offer the same versatility and cleaning power.

Others offer a versatility that allows cleaning not only floors but also upholstery and stairs. Some examples would be Dyson V6 Absolute, Hoover Air Cordless Lift and Shark Rocket with Duo Clean.

How to choose a lightweight vacuum cleaner?

Before shopping online or going to a retail store, you should first answer these questions to help you get a better idea of which vacuum cleaner to buy.

1. What is your budget?

Would You Spend Up To $500 On A Quality Vacuum Cleaner Is Your Budget Just A Hundred?

Setting a difficult budget helps you quickly narrow down your list of options. It automatically eliminates those outside your price range.

2. Do you have wall-to-wall carpets?

Look around your house, does it have blanket carpeting, half and half or all floors bare?

This determines the type of vacuum cleaner you will buy. And whether to pick something with brush roll on/off feature or not.

If you’re cleaning the bare floor, obviously you won’t need the same amount of power and cordless will probably suffice.

3. How big is your house?

The size of your home will determine whether or not you will need a corded vacuum cleaner.

Small homes, especially mobile homes where space is excellent – a cordless vacuum cleaner like the Dyson V6 will suffice but for medium to large homes over 1,500 square feet, a corded vacuum is a must.

4. Do you have pets?

If you have pets, you will not only need a powerful vacuum cleaner. But also something that has pet cleaning accessories for cleaning upholstery, too.

Another option is to have a deep cleaning as well as a handheld device for your above-floor cleaning needs.

Lightest: Oreck Magnesium RS

The Oreck Magnesium RS is perhaps the lightest vertical vacuum on the market right now, weighing in at just under 8 pounds. What’s great about it is that it doesn’t lack in strength. Although it is lightweight, you can count on it to deep clean carpets.

Oreck was able to achieve this thanks to magnesium – one of the lightest minerals in the world at the moment.

Very light in weight

Magnesium is one of the lightest metals in the world, 33 percent lighter than aluminum and 75 percent lighter than steel. This makes it an ideal choice for a non-commercial vacuum cleaner.

This combination of weight and power allowed Oreck to simplify his design down to the basics. This means using a thin magnesium frame that wraps around a wide band. But a thin bag allows it to reach under most furniture.

Not Versatile

The downside of this design is that it limits the possibility of using this broom to clean floors only.

It does not have any hoses or attachments that allow you to use it on upholstery or stairs, but the lack of hoses gives it a greater efficiency in terms of strength.

Oreck calls this “direct suction path technology” where the airflow has a straighter path. This means better power and greater cleaning power.

Since this vacuum cleaner is packaged, it is also suitable for asthmatics. Most people with this disease are either old or frail, so they will benefit most from this combination of light weight and strength.

What makes this a good option?

  • Weighs just 7.7 lbs thanks to its lightweight magnesium chassis
  • The whole HEPA filtration uses a bag
  • Large dirt capacity – about 8 dry liters
  • 7 years warranty
  • 30 ft power cord
  • Fingertip controls reduce the need for bending

It’s a little pricey but this lightweight vacuum combines being lightweight without compromising on suction and excitement.

minimum:

Oreck Magnesium RS is great for people with allergies because it has a sealed HEPA filtration system that uses bags. It filters dust down to 0.3 microns so this would be a good choice for people with asthma. This is one of the lightest at just 7.7 lbs.

It’s worth it: Dyson V6 Absolute

The Dyson V6 is a great choice if you want something that’s lightweight and versatile yet still has good cleaning performance. This vacuum cleaner can be used on different surfaces like carpet, hardwood, tile, etc. thanks to its soft roller and direct drive cleaning head. It’s a little priced around $300, but its overall performance makes it a great choice especially for people with smaller homes.

There is no doubt that the Dyson V6 Absolute is one of the best all-in-one vacuum cleaners on the market today.

A big reason for its versatility and combinations. It was such a hit that Dyson hasn’t changed the basic design since launching the DC35.

The latest generation V6 has the same trigger handle and extension stick as well as two ground attachments for both the open and carpeted floor.

This is what separates this from other cordless vacuums on the market and a great reason to add me to a lot of “best” lists.

Say what you want about the price or lack of a deep clean – this machine will thrive when used in the right setting.

What is the correct setting?

Note that this machine will not beat any vertical vacuum cleaner in terms of deep cleaning. But if you need a quick cleaning tool that can clean almost everything inside your home, then very little can match its versatility.

If you have a small home with mostly bare floors – this may be the only vacuum cleaner you need because it has enough power to pick up dust and because it has HEPA filtration, it keeps allergens down to 0.3 microns inside the dust basket.

There is exposure to allergens during the unpacking process because it is without bags.

Unfortunately, all of this technology will come at a price—more than $400 for something completely new. If you want to spend $180++ more, why not look at Dyson’s latest wireless version – V8 Absolute.

It comes with more power, excitement, and improvements in several key areas. These include dirt basket and max key. The new design of the dirt bin makes it easy to empty without having to use your fingers to dislodge dirt. The Max button now uses a sliding switch which also makes it easy to toggle the max suction feature.

What makes this a great option?

  • Weighs only 5.1 lbs even with extension stick and floor tool
  • Possibly the most versatile handheld vacuum cleaner in the world today
  • Very good suction for cordless vacuum
  • Interchangeable tools make it usable on floors, stairs, upholstery, vents as well as other corners and crevices
  • Filters (both HEPA before and after motor) are washable

minimum:

One of the best products Dyson has ever released – its combination of interchangeable tools, power and maneuverability is unmatched. A few like Bissell and Shark copied his design but this group can’t be matched.

Lightest Shark: Shark Navigator NV105

The Shark Navigator NV105 is another great option if you’re looking for a vertical vacuum cleaner that weighs less than 11 pounds. This is a cheaper alternative to the Oreck Magnesium RS but it is bagless, so it will be exposed to dirt when empty. One advantage that Oreck excels at is its ability to clean upholstery thanks to the detachable hose and tools.

When comparing different Shark vacuums from the Navigator and Rotator series, the NV105 is the lightest of the bunch.

This slim upright weighs only 10.5 pounds but has full-size functionality minus the extra weight.

Like most other vacuums in the Shark vertical line, this one comes with a hose and extension wand.

More Versatile Than Standard Vertical

This gives it the ability to clean over floors but it doesn’t have the Lift Away feature or the Lift Away feature that these other variants boast.

It limits its versatility somewhat, but if you don’t mind that limitation, this is a good option that offers very good cleaning power from bare floor to medium pile carpet.

One thing this Shark has on the Lift Away Series is the cyclone filtration system that basically increases the interval you need to clean the engine pre-filter.

It also comes with a crevice tool and a pet upholstery tool that completes its kit – both of which allow you to clean upholstery and air vents.

This does not have swivel steering although this is minus points for moving around the furniture.

Another downside is the lack of a HEPA filter so allergy sufferers cross this off your list.

What makes this a good option?

  • Weighs only 10.5 pounds
  • Able to clean upholstery and to some extent on stairs thanks to the hose, attachments and extension wand.
  • Cyclonic filtration extends the time you need to clean the motor pre-filter
  • Decent warranty for 3 years
  • One of the cheapest options in the Navigator series

minimum:

If budget is a big concern, take a long look at it because it’s under $80. It’s not as light as the Oreck but still a decent 10.5 pounds. Don’t expect to deep clean thick carpets because it lacks strength but has good variability.

Short Charging Time: Makita XLC02R1B

The Makita XLC021W is the lightest option of the bunch at just 2.7 lbs. It’s also the fastest way to recharge in just 25 minutes. Being a Makita, expect powerful performance from this lightweight cordless device. You can use this in your home workshop as a shop vacuum. It doesn’t have any motorized brush, so don’t expect it to clean carpets well.

When you hear about the Makita brand, I bet the first thing that comes to your mind is power tools. And you are right that they make very good power tools like drills and cordless stuff, but they also produce high quality brooms.

The XLC02R1W is one of their latest creations and is powered by a 2.0Ah Li-ion battery that takes just 25 minutes to recharge.

Yes, this is not a typo. This vacuum cleaner takes only 25 minutes to recharge, faster than a Dyson or Black and Decker vacuum.

One of the lightest options

This cordless only weighs less than 3 pounds, making it the lightest of the 5 vacuum cleaners here.

Don’t let that make you think that this is lacking in power, on the contrary, this cleaning machine packs a punch, capable of picking up workshop debris such as saw dust and cut nuts and bolts.

The downside is the poor performance of the carpet as it lacks a motorized brush tool.

And with the main stick and ground tool attached, it’s less than 40 inches long. So if you are over 5’8″, you will have to bend over.

What makes this a good option?

  • Recharge time is very short 25 minutes
  • Great tool for indoor workshops capable of picking up things like saw dust and small bits of nails
  • The lightest in the bunch weighing just 2.7 lbs
  • Capable of being a handheld vacuum cleaner thanks to the removable extension wand and interchangeable tools
  • Great price on Amazon comes with free shipping

minimum:

If you are looking for a cordless shop, this is one of the best options thanks to its fast recharging feature and powerful motor capable of picking up things like saw dust, nuts and bolts. Just be sure to clean the filters frequently and don’t expect this to effectively clean the carpet.

Swiss Army Knife: Hoover Air Cordless Lift

I fondly call the Hoover Air Cordless Lift Knife the Swiss Army because of the versatility it brings to the table. The ‘Lift’ feature converts this vacuum cleaner into a vacuum cleaner easily and allows you to clean stairs and upholstery with ease. It doesn’t have the power of a Dyson but can hold more dirt thanks to the stand design.

Shark was the first to use the concept of “levitation” and now Hoover has created his own concept but in a wireless version. I love innovative products, one of the best innovative products.

And while it’s not the lightest, the lift feature adds an element of versatility to this machine.

How do?

It allows you to separate the spine and the main floor tool from the body thus turning this into a vacuum cleaner.

But without any wheels. This gives you more flexibility in terms of where you can use it.

With this feature in addition to cleaning floors also clean stairs, upholstery and even your car because it is wireless. It comes with a flexible hose and two attachments – a pivoting dust removal brush attachment and a crevice/dust removal brush set.

good running time

Runtime is also an impressive 50 minutes from the two lithium-ion batteries that come with this, making this one of the most reliable cordless cleaners on the market right now.

But the downside is that since this is a cordless machine, don’t expect it to be a deep cleaning machine.

But if you live in a small house with low pile carpeting or just rugs, this machine will be enough to cover all the rooms. It has the same versatility as a Dyson cordless but at an affordable price and a larger enclosure.

What makes this a great option?

  • Weighs only 12.5 lbs
  • 5 year long warranty
  • Lift feature converts this from a vacuum cleaner to a drum vacuum cleaner (without wheels)
  • It also comes with a pivot brush and a crevice and brush combo tool for your floor cleaning needs

minimum:

This is one of the most versatile products on the market today (perhaps second only to the Dyson V6 Absolute). It is able to clean not only floors but also stairs, upholstery and the interior of your car. Since it first appeared on the market last year, the price has dropped significantly. And if you are looking for a cheaper alternative from Dyson, this is one of the best options.

to finish

These five products are a combination of a handheld vacuum cleaner and an upright vacuum that provides me with the best cleaning performance for its weight class.

As you may have noticed, there are two types of cordless vacuums because I love the way these products have evolved over the years in terms of cleaning functionality and uptime.

Why is Oreck Magnesium a good choice?

Oreck Magnesium is probably the lightest available at the moment. This full-sized one weighs just under 8 lbs. And it still has enough power and action to deep clean carpets.

Unfortunately this product is only limited to floor cleaning. Lacks hose and tools for cleaning over floors. This is the most expensive product on this list at around $475. But that’s because it uses a magnesium frame that is responsible for its light weight.

Why Dyson V6 Absolute?

Put the Dyson V6 Absolute in a category of its own not just because it’s light but because of its versatility. None of the vacuums here can match them in terms of coverage and performance.

It has a separate attachment for cleaning floors and carpets. The former I really like because it really pulls the dirt out and prevents the fine roller scrubber head from scooping out the snow. If the V6 Absolute is too pricey, you can take a look at the different variants available. And find one that fits your needs.

other options

If Oreck or Dyson go a little over your budget, consider the Shark Navigator NV105. It’s not as versatile as the Dyson V6 or as powerful as Oreck Magnesium but it’s only $80 at Amazon. It’s a decent straightener to have in small to medium sized homes because it’s not too bulky and still provides enough power on carpeting.

For DIYers looking for a heavy-duty tool for cleaning up dirt in their workshop, Makita has a product called the XLC02R1W. It’s wireless it charges in just 25 minutes, yes you heard that right in just 25 minutes.

You can also use this inside your home as a stain cleaner. But the extension wand is short, so if you’re over 5’8, you’ll have to bend over to use it as a vacuum cleaner.

This product has been discontinued by the manufacturer and has been replaced by XLC02RB1W with 18V battery.

Hoover is a good replacement for Dyson

The Air Cordless Lift is another great option because it offers a vertically sized enclosure in a cordless package. Hoover says this product has vertical strength but actually won’t deep clean either.

However, it offers V6-like versatility thanks to a “lift” feature that separates the case from the main floor tool. These features allow people to use this product as a cordless vacuum cleaner. This is a good alternative that is cheaper than the Dyson V6 Absolute because it is about $200 cheaper.

Another alternative to consider is Shark Rocket with Duo Clean.

It is similar to the V6 Absolute in terms of how the tools switch but has a cord. The unique selling point of this product is the “DuoClean” head which combines a soft roller and a bristle brush. This redesigned cleaning head has been a hit with its effectiveness on hard floors and carpets.

And you don’t need to change tools when moving from one deck to another. It is another cheaper alternative to the Dyson V6 engine that offers better performance but is wired.

If you feel like I’ve missed anything, let me know in the comments section below.
