Stairs should be one of the hardest places to clean inside your home.
With a traditional vertical broom, this is almost impossible due to the sheer size.
Even upright vacuums fitted with a hose will have a hard time cleaning this part of the house.
These hoses are not very long (usually 3 to 5 feet) and if you have long stairs it is nearly impossible.
Other factors include the length and bulk of the power cord. It’s not easy to pull about 15 pounds of vacuum cleaner.
Find vacuums with unique and innovative features
Fortunately, there are manufacturers who have created innovative products that make cleaning stairs possible.
In this article I will focus on cordless vacuums because it won’t take long to clean stairs. You’ll only need less than 10 minutes to clean a set of stairs.
Cordless vacuums are great options for using stairs because you are freed from the burden of managing wires.
Newer models have better batteries that last at least 15 minutes.
But in case you need something with wire, I added a section for that.
To help you navigate through this guide, click on any of the links below if you’re in a hurry.
But I recommend reading all of this to give you a better idea of which vacuum cleaner is best for your needs.

Let’s start first with what to look for in a cordless stair vacuum cleaner?
The most important feature to look at is how long it will run on a single charge.
You’ll need something running for at least 15 minutes. It is long enough to clean regular stairs without the need to recharge.
Versatile and versatile
Next will be portability and versatility.
It should weigh less than 10 pounds so it doesn’t strain your hands and wrists.
And if possible, find a vacuum with interchangeable tools and a stick. An automated attachment would be a big bonus if you have carpeting but these products tend to be more expensive.
If possible, find something with special tools
Some high-end brands like the Dyson V6 provide you with a coarse carpet brush and a soft cloth brush for bar floors.
To give you a specific example if your home has carpet stairs, the DC59 MotorHead would be a great choice because it has a direct drive motor cleaning head.
This tool provides excellent agitation for picking up hair, dust and other impurities from the carpet.
Dyson Fluffy is a good example
For homes with only bare stairs, the V6 Fluffy would be a no-brainer because of the soft cylinder head cleaning tool.
It uses a combination of soft nylon and hard carbon fiber strands that wrap around a rod.
This is an effective tool for bare floors because it literally picks up dirt without scratching the surface. And if you look closely at the design, you will find that it has diagonal grooves designed to capture fine dust.
A bristle brush is not the best tool on a bare floor. It tends to make a bigger mess because the tough bristles will throw things around.
Not all blanks here will have it, but some will come close, just scroll down to find out.
Our pick – Dyson V6 Absolute
The V6 Absolute Vacuum Cleaner is one of the most powerful and versatile cordless vacuums out of the world right now outside of the V10 and V8. This is in my opinion the best option you have for cleaning stairs because it is cordless. The ability to attach the main cleaning head directly to the body also makes it easy to do so.
- The most popular choice on bare floor surfaces
- Great performance on both carpets and exposed stairs
- Lightweight and versatile, also capable of cleaning upholstery
- Decent running time of up to 20 minutes
- very expensive
- Messy to empty it (you can choose the cheaper Dyson V7)
More affordable than Dyson V8 and V10
The V8 and V10 are newer versions but we like the V6 because it is much cheaper which makes it a great option.
Very few will be able to match it in these areas which is a big reason why many consumers love it.
Great not only on floors but also on stairs
Not only does this machine work well on floors, but it works well on stairs thanks to its lightweight design, tools, and strength.
First, let’s focus on product design
The innovative design allows consumers to use this as a handheld vacuum cleaner.
With the extension wand and floor tool included, this is a fully functional vacuum cleaner capable of cleaning bare floors or carpets well.
It comes with two cleaning heads for the job – the soft roller cleaning head and the direct driver cleaning head.
Both are designed for bare floor and carpet respectively.
The charm of this design is the interchangeability of these parts.
Cleaning the stairs is as simple as removing the wand and attaching either of the two power tools directly to the body.
The floor horn itself rotates independently, so even without the stick it moves easily.
Good for cleaning upholstery too
It also comes with a small motorized tool for upholstery similar to those on a Dyson mattress.
To illustrate what I mean, watch this video to show you how this product cleans stairs…
In the first part of the video, you can see that even with the extension wand and direct cleaner head that attaches to the vacuum cleaner, he’s still smart enough to move around the step and has picked up a lot!
The use of a small turbo brush allows you to clean the vertical parts of the stairs. It’s impossible with Qaim.
Remember that V6 Absolute is not your only option if you choose a Dyson. There are a total of 10 different variants of the V6 each armed with a set of tools for a specific purpose.
This particular alternative to stairs is ideal for homes with or without carpet. It also doubles as a portable vacuum cleaner which is why it is at the top of the list.
minimum: The Dyson V6 Absolute is currently the best stair cleaning tool out there. It combines strength, versatility, portability and superior quality that none of its competitors can match. This product is great for both rugs and bare floors. If you only have bare ground, use the V6 Fluffy. For carpets, the DC59 MotorHead is a great deal.
Super Fast Charging: Makita XLC02R1B 18V
The Makita XLC02R1W is at least another good option on carpet-free stairs thanks to its compact size and interchangeability. One notable feature is the ultra-fast charging time which will only take 20 minutes.
- It will be fully charged in just 25 minutes
- Extremely lightweight and maneuverable – great for cleaning stairs
- Great choice for heavy cleaning
- Lacks a motorized brush
- There is no rotating steering
The biggest hitch with a lot of cordless vacuums right now is the long charging time.
Even brands like Dyson above will take a few hours to fully charge.
There is only one brand on the market that has designed their batteries to be able to charge in less than an hour.
20 minutes to be exact.
Here’s the Makita XLC02R1B Stick Vacuum Cleaner. This is an updated version of the BCL180W that is not currently available on Amazon.
Similar versatility as the V6
In terms of functionality, this Makita vacuum cleaner is similar to the V6 Absolute vacuum cleaner. This means that you can also attach the main floor to the vacuum itself and remove the wand making it a very powerful floor cleaner especially on hard floor surfaces.
The suction is impressive because it is able to suck up large objects such as bolts and nuts.
Great as a shop vacuum
In a way, Makita designed this as a shop space for DIYers who like to make their own stuff. Imagine what this could clean up – saw dust, clamps, small nails and the like.
This cannot be used on a plush rug
The downside to this product is the lack of a motorized brush which means you cannot use this on medium to plush carpets. But on bare floors and stairs with low pile, it should be able to do the job.
This broom isn’t popular but don’t ignore it if you need something sturdy that can clean finer things like saw dust or larger items like screws. Heck, it’s a cordless shop vacuum. Add to that the 25-minute charging time, and you have a handy little tool that you can use both inside your garage and in your home.
Next Generation: Black + Decker BDH2400FH 2-in-1
The Black & Decker BDH2400FH is a good cheap option if the Dyson V6 Absolute is too expensive. It has the same characteristics as the Dyson as the interchangeable tools and has very good suction that will clean bare floors and low stairs.
- A cheaper option than the Dyson V8
- The ability to attach the main cleaning head to the body makes this a great choice for cleaning stairs
- Good suction at 40W pneumatic
- Even performing on the carpet
The success of the Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner has spawned plenty of imitators and this vacuum is one of them – in a subtle way.
Similar filter to Dyson
When you look at the design and filtration, the Black & Decker BDH2400FH has some Dyson DNA making it a viable option for stairs and a cheaper option at that.
This vacuum cleaner is part of the next generation of Black and Decker vacuum cleaners equipped with ORA technology.
What is ORA technology?
ORA technology is the Black and Decker version of hurricane technology. Similar to Dyson, it uses “cyclones” that prevent fine dust from degrading performance.
In terms of design, I mentioned earlier that this vacuum is in many ways a Dyson clone in terms of part interchangeability.
Like the V6 Absolute, this vacuum comes with an extension wand that turns this into a wand vacuum.
The floor head comes with swivel steering, so maneuverability is not an issue.
Away from the extension wand and this turns into a handheld vacuum. It weighs less than 7 pounds so it’s light enough to clean stairs.
Suction more than Dyson in default power mode
In terms of power, this vacuum cleaner has very decent figures for air wattage – about 40 which is more than Dyson in normal mode.
But it doesn’t have a Max mode where that number jumps to 100 but still 40 watts of air is pretty decent for when you need to clean bare floors or low-pile carpeting.
This vacuum cleaner is a great option for people who can’t afford a V6 Absolute engine. It comes with decent power and the same versatility that Dyson brings to the table minus its thrilling and versatile suite of gear.
Good Housekeeping Approved: Shark Pet Perfect II
The Shark Pet Perfect II is a good choice if you want something lightweight that is able to clean pet hair on the carpet. The agitation is good thanks to the stiff bristles but the NiCad battery takes a long time to recharge. If you feel NiCad is too old, you can opt for the latest Shark Pet Perfect LV801 which has a lithium battery.
- A cheap option that works best for cleaning pet hair
- Decent agitation that will be effective in cleaning dirt from upholstery
- NiCad battery is prone to power fade
- It takes a long time to recharge
This Shark pet hair sniffing hand has garnered positive reviews from both Consumer Reports and Good House Keeping but a few flaws have kept it ranked higher.
It takes a long time to ship
Firstly, the recharging process takes 16 hours and will work for about 15 minutes on a full charge.
Some issues with fit and finish
Second, the attachments do not lock securely in place, there is a risk of the attachment falling off when you don’t push hard enough.
Works great on stairs
Aside from these two drawbacks, it works great on stairs, both carpet and hard floors due to the motorized brush attachment.
It doesn’t spin or spin on an axis but it still does the job. If you suffer from any kind of arthritis, avoid buying it.
Biggest Pro, costs under $50, and is the second cheapest of the 7 brooms here.
If you need to clean some pet hair on carpet stairs, this is a great option for spot cleaning. Despite getting a nod from Consumer Reports and good housekeeping, their very long shipping time causes them to drop their rankings.
Pet Hair Cleaner: New Bissell Pet Hair Eraser
The new Bissell Pet Hair Eraser is a newer version of the older Bissell Corded Pet Hair Eraser and is a great choice as it has a better lithium-ion battery that will work and last longer. Like the old version, this one is lightweight and specifically designed for cleaning pet hair. If you have a lot of pets at home, this is a good option to clean hair from stairs.
- Great choice for cleaning pet hair on stairs
- The lithium-ion battery will last longer than the older version
- There is no motorized brush which affects its effectiveness when cleaning pet hair
A few years ago, Bissell had a product called a pet hair eraser that cleaned pet hair.
Although it was a good product, it had many flaws that this new version addressed.
Great for pet hair
If you’re looking for something to clean pet hair with on stairs, give Bissell Pet Hair Eraser a closer look.
It now has a motorized brush attachment that works well for picking up pet hair not only on upholstery but also on stairs.
The two-stage filtration system does a better job of filtering out the larger dirt and keeping it away from the main filter inside.
Cleans pet hair
What makes this great for stairs is the motorized brush itself which makes it effective at picking up dirt.
No, it won’t clean pet hair in depth but at least you’re removing surface dirt and not building up.
The downside to this tool is the lack of a pivot point that puts more pressure on your stakes as you move them back and forth.
Unlike old pet hair erasers that use a NiCad battery, this version has a lithium-ion battery that will work for up to 15 minutes. The recharging process will take about 3 hours more or less.
It also comes with a crevice and upholstery tool for cleaning tight spaces and furnishings such as sofas, chairs, and mattresses.
If spending more than $100 isn’t an option, take a look at this cheap portable device that sells for less than $60 on Amazon. It doesn’t have swivel steering like the Dyson but still does the job.
What about corded options?
Well, for this to be a complete guide, I’m going to make some recommendations for wire brooms for stairs. This guide wouldn’t be complete without it, so here it is.
Dyson clone: Shark Rocket TruePet
Shark Rocket TruePet is Dyson V6 wired. Both products will offer a similar type of versatility that the other options here don’t. It has similar strength because it’s wire-bound, but it’s heavier and the wire limits reach somewhat. If you don’t mind, go ahead and roll the dice with this one.
- This is as versatile as the Dyson V6 Absolute but with a wire
- Interchangeable tools make this a great option for cleaning stairs
- LED headlights aid visibility
- Reaches the limits of rope and usability
- Heavier top than Dyson
If you can build a version of the Dyson V6 series with wire, the Shark Rocket TruePet will soon be there.
From placing the power switch to the floor-cleaning head, this Dyson vacuum cleaner screams and then some.
Same design as Dyson Wireless
Like the Dyson, you can attach the main floor tool to the vacuum cleaner itself to deep clean carpeted stairs. It also comes with a small turbo brush, similar to the smaller Dyson brush and will allow you to clean vertical areas of stairs.
It has about 500 watts of power which is very good. Since it has a cord, you don’t have to worry about running out of batteries.
But she has a wire
The power cord is approximately 32 feet long and does not have a return feature. It has wire hooks where you can arrange the wire after use.
Unlike the Dyson V6 Absolute, the Shark Rocket TruePet has LED headlights which means better visibility when cleaning low-light areas like under the mattress or tables.
If you want something without the wire, I’d suggest you consider the Shark ION Rocket IR101. It’s the newest Shark vacuum that has the same features as this only without a cord.
Heavier than a V6 or V8
It’s heavier than the Dyson V6 – more than 8 pounds which would put pressure on the wrist when you lift it above your head.
And since it’s heavy on top, it won’t stand alone.
Wide cleaning path
But it does give you a wider cleaning path (12″ vs. 9.8″) and a longer range thanks to the extra-long crevice tool.
More tools from Dyson
And here’s a bonus – it comes with a hardwood floor genie that looks like a Dyson Hard! You don’t need to buy this expensive product because Shark has the same tool.
If you don’t mind winding and unwinding the long cord before and after using this, this is a viable (and cheaper) option for cleaning stairs as well as general house cleaning but note that since it has a similar design to the Dyson, it has a small dirt caddy which means frequent trips to Trash.
Wired Portable: Eureka EasyClean 71B
The Eureka EasyClean 71B is specially designed for cleaning carpet stairs. It has this feature called the riser visor where the main cleaning head rotates up and down allowing the risers to be cleaned. If you have carpet stairs and pets at home, take a look at them.
- Great motorized brush for cleaning pet hair
- Proper agitation will clean the carpet well
- Detachable hose and crevice tool give this some versatility
- short power cord
- small dirt box
If the Shark missile is too bulky, here’s a lightweight option – the Eureka EasyClean 71B. This is one of the cheapest options out here for under $50!
Great lightweight stair cleaner
This portable, lightweight device is another viable option for carpeted stairs because it has a motorized brush.
It also has one unique feature that allows you to clean carpeted stairs vertically – the riser visor.
Instead of using a fixed nozzle, the Eureka allows it to rotate at an angle so that a vertical area can be cleaned.
This applies not only to stairs but also to upholstery.
Low height nozzle will remove larger pieces of debris
The downside of the low-rise nozzle is that it will have a plowing effect when you’re trying to clean large items like Cheerios.
But to clean dust and dirt on bare floor stairs, that shouldn’t be a problem.
The only thing that worries me about this is the short 20ft power cord which may not be enough for a long plane of stairs or stairs that turn. If you don’t have a power cord near your drawer, you may want to opt for something wireless.
This is a lightweight, lightweight corded option for people who don’t mind having a cord in the way. It will pick up pet hair on upholstery and stairs. But I have to warn you that it doesn’t carry as much as the other options here but still does the job.
Remember that cleaning stairs is not difficult if you have the right tools.
You can go old school with a broom and shovel. But from experience, it is very difficult to pick up statically charged dust with just a broom. What you need is a tool that sucks dirt, pet hair, rabbit dust, etc.
Homes with carpeted stairs will need more TLC in terms of vacuuming due to the buildup of potential allergens.
Why do I love V6 Absolute?
In terms of complete performance and versatility, the V6 Absolute is your absolute choice. It comes with cleaning designed for both bare floors and carpets as well as other above-floor cleaning needs.
The biggest downside is the price but if you can afford it, you won’t regret your choice. Although consumers have complained about the dirt basket not emptying as easily as advertised.
Regarding the price, you can choose to renew and save hundreds.
Take a look at the V8 if you want a better product overall
If you want to unpack the Dyson Wireless even better, go with the V8. It comes with the new V8 engine, longer running time and better basket design.
For those who have a workshop in their home, the Makita XLC02R1W has the power of a shop vacuum cleaner with the same versatility as a Dyson.
I only recommend other Dyson clones – Black & Decker BDH2400FH, Shark Rocket TruePet and Bissell 1683A Trilogy if you don’t want to spend on a Dyson.
The portable ones here are great if you’re looking for something to clean upholstery and stairs.
